I don't care if you wear sneakers and a tank top while riding. It's your hide your risking. But for God's sake, if you have a passenger and let her wear flip flops, shorts and a tank top, at least have the common decency not to ride like a complete fucking douche. Just saw one of these guys doing just this. Both him and his passenger dressed as above. And the rider is cutting back and forth between lanes of traffic at 70+ miles an hour on shitty roads with some of the worst drivers in California. Fine, risk your own hide, but give a thought to what will happen to your passenger if and when you go down. |

What pisses me off is when you see a guy with most of his gear on (gloves, jacket, & helmet) with some chick on the back with NOTHING BUT a tube top, short shorts, and flip flops. ![]()
Way to go champ, you win my asshole of the day award. There is no way in hell I would wear any gear if my passenger didn't have any. Now I'm no saint when it comes to gear. I would ride without anything and even let my wife do it too if the ride was really short. However, when I had my big wreck and found out what it's like to fly over a car, I walked away without a scratch on my body because of my gear. I'm a firm believer in it. |

Apparently they don't understand what they do to you in the hospital for road rash...
1. They strap you down. 2. no pain killers (because of blood loss) 3. They scrub the wound with Brillo pad and steel wool to remove any rocks, dirt and fragments. When I get a bike, I will wear full gear and the best helmet money can buy. |

| If you're going to go with jeans rather than riding pants, I've had good luck with Riggs Work Wear by Wrangler. The denim jeans are made out of really heavy denim and they also make pants out of rip-stop, some with thick, heavy Cordura down the fronts of the legs. |

I cannot get my GF to wear gear to save my life. I make her wear shoes instead of flip flops but other than that I'm not going to argue until I'm blue in the face anymore that she wear gear. She doesn't want to and she accepts full responsibility if anything happens. I've showed her "road rash chic" if you know who that is, she still won't wear gear. Whatever. I could simply just never take her anywhere on the bike, but why is it my responsibility to look out for her wearing gear? She's 24 years old and almost a RN and I won't "babysit" her, if you will. I would think she knows better but she chooses to accept the risk just like people who don't ride with a helmet. I have gear for her to wear if she wants to (correctly fitted jacket and gloves), so I feel I have fulfilled my responsibility. I love her to death and she's a really good passenger, but I can't drill it into her head that something might happen. Like I said, take away from this post what you will, but it's not quite fair to call me a DB when I'm riding in a jacket, gloves and helmet and she's behind me in jeans, a tshirt and tennis shoes. I do wish she would wear the gear though.
I can already hear someone saying "well if you love her then don't let her ride unless she wears gear." Well, true to a point, but it's not worth the bitching and moaning I have to hear. Like I said, she's a grown woman, she can make her own decisions concerning her safety. Me, I just ride as safely as possible when she's with me. Thank God, no incidents yet in 5 years of riding together. I would feel like shit if someone wrecked us and she got skinned up really bad for life, but she knows this risk and we've had this conversation a thousand times... Edited for spelling. |

You'll feel worse than shit if she's fucked up or dead on the side of the road. Trust me, have a relative that killed his wife on the back of a bike, he's alive, she's gone. I won't let someone on my bike without basic gear. When something bad happens, it'll likely be me trying to comfort, repair or respond to you lying in the ditch, and it's not worth that. Then, your lack of self-preservation becomes MY problem. BTW, my wife goes ATGATT. |

BTW, my wife goes ATGATT. to bounce of of what he said I used to sell bikes and I used to ride on occasion with the local sport bike club that had some female hanger ons many of those girls were smart nice and gorgeous BUT they were the same They loved the retarded bad boys and refused to wear anything would cover them up so they could be sexy as when they tired of the first stunta' they could get another I had a couple of them ride with me and hang out with a few they rejected me because my idea of a nice night was to ride to another town 50 miles away have dinner and ice cream and ride back and I made um wear actual shoes pants and a jacket that was boring they wanted to go ride on the back of some 20somthing retards bike and run exit/entrance ramps on I-80 all night at 100+ in flip flops and a tube top again they reap what they sow saw a few get road rash and 1 paid with her life |

Quoted: Squids will never change. I am AGATT but you'll never convince squids that they'll need gear. Yep, Squids never learn Actually, I'm AGATT, except if I'm specifically staying on base (riding from base housing to my shop), then it's helmet, boots, gloves, uniform, and reflective vest (add minimum leather jacket all other times). |

Your GF has the right to make her own choice, if she were my GF her choice would put her in her walking mode. This +1000. I told my wife she is not getting on the back of my bike until we get her a helmet, jacket, gloves, and see if any of her 500 pairs of shoes and boots meet the "over the ankle" criteria. |

I have this argument with my idiot brother, all the time. He'll put his girlfriend's kid, on his bike all the time, with adult 1/2 helmets. Pisses me off to no end.
I have 3 bikes, and my kids have never been on with me, because I do not have the correct fitting gear. I'd never be able to live with myself, if I let the get hurt. |

Quoted: Quoted: Thats one thing I never do. I always wear boots and jeans. Did you know that you can get road-rash through jeans? I didn't! Jeans were undamaged. Jeans are a terrible excuse for riding gear. If you MUST wear something like jeans, buy Firehose jeans or something with cordura (double-front Carharts) for the abrasion resistance. |

Now you can be all pissy and tell her she can't ride on your bike and she can say "our relationship is through." Free wills and all that. What is it about being controlling with people? Fuck, just live your lives and stop worrying about others. (This isn't to discourage discussions on the subject by any means. Communication is always key.) Talk about not getting it. Think. A little. You're on your bike with someone you love. You care about your own life and skin, and wear some gear so that you don't a: die and b: suffer life altering and painful injuries. Your passenger wears nothing even resembling safe gear. But hey, you respect her choices man. You round a corner to find that some nozzle left the cap on the fill hose off of a tanker and spilled diesel all over the road, and when you hit it it's ice and you go down....sliding about 100 feet down the pavement while your bike and passenger slide and tumble right along with you. When you get up, you're probably shaken and hurting, maybe even have a little injury here or there...but you've got a lid and proper jacket, maybe gloves and boots. Your passenger? That person you love and would take a bullet for? They're over there in the ditch with cuts and road rash all over them, bleeding like crazy, in excruciating pain (ever had road rash? it fucking hurts bad). Even tho you utterly, totally respect their choice there's this problem you see.....you love this person and you're watching them suffer miserably. Perhaps it's even worse than that and their fall included their bare head hitting the pavement. Maybe face first, and that face you wake up to in the morning is now ground off and the skull full of torn up meat is screaming at you from where her lips used to be. But hey, at least you're not a controlling dick of a husband or boyfriend by requiring that YOUR passenger take some BASIC precautions so you don't have to look at her like that or feel responsible for the rest of your fucking life. That's something to feel proud about....being so liberal. (btw, that wreck I described? Thats exactly how I wrecked 20 years ago. No amount of skill or experience can save you 100% percent of the time) |

These were not stressed jeans. Thats why whenever i go out on rides with my crew we are always in full leathers, a racing back protector, full gauntlet gloves, racing boots and a helmet. I have seen too many crashes and i have what could happen. I low sided doing 90mph on the track, i was able to walk away from it but the bike was a different story. |

Just bought the wife a leather jacket on sale (200$ off) at Dennis Kirk... just need to get her a helmet, and we still have her old desert steel toed boots.
for the Cruiser guys. do you guys wear full leather pants or just the chaps that cover the legs? I wear either jeans or canvas type working pants when I ride. |

Squids will never change. I am AGATT but you'll never convince squids that they'll need gear. THIS. ATGATT. Just had to switch to my heavier jacket... have a new helmet on the way, got new gloves a couple weeks ago because my previous ones were two years old. I do admit, the bad thing I do is wear jeans. I do have textile overpants that I wear in the winter... however since I just got a Sport Touring bike, and will be making longer trips, I have in mind to get some proper riding pants. I'd like to get a pair of the Joe Rocket Alter Egos... zip off panels for hot weather, put 'em back on for cool weather. Squids will never change. If I ever met someone like that, I'd have to point his GF to the Road Rash Queen. I will not allow anyone to ride pillion without wearing at least a jacket, helmet, jeans and proper shoes/boots. |
