What kind of groups are shot at 1000 yd high power matches? I had a guy tell me he shot 5" groups at 1800 yds with his 50 barrett in matches. I didn't know there were 1800 yd competitions. He also said he had a 120X scope? I kept my mouth shut. This is bullshit right?

Theoretically, a 1 minute rifle with a perfect shooter and perfect ammo will get a 10'' group at 1000 yards. Obviously, that's a stretch. I've only shot to 500, but the midrange prone shooters often shoot palma matches too. For those matches, they use very accurate bolt action rifles, and rebarrel very frequently. The targets are also huge. The aiming black is 44''. In other words, I don't know, but I'm sure a good shooter does impressive things in those matches. One thing to remember is that things like wind will have a much bigger impact at 1000 than they do it shorter ranges (200,300,600). ETA: If that guy was shooting a 5'' group at 1800 yards, he was shooting .27 MOA. If he is equally as accurate at 100 yards, his group should be half the bullet diameter.  |

At last year's interservice match, the top 5 shooters all shot a 200 with any rifle/any sight (with X-counts in the teens). I think the 10-ring is 20" diameter. I'm pretty sure this is done prone with a sling, no aritificial support.
And I think someone mentioned the new benchrest record was set in Ohio at Thunder Ranch, a 1.403" group. |

I don't know about 1000 yds. But the man who has the world record 600 yd. group shoots at the local range I go to. Group was right at 3/8" and was 5 shots. The mans name is John Lewis.

Pretty much... anyone who can shoot under a minute at that range knows better than to claim 120x.  Last time I shot on the 700y line, I was dialed up to approx 12x and the mirage was kicking my ass... it was a little better when I backed it down, but not much. Through the spotting scope at 40x? It was a LOT worse. |

FWIW, my personal best at 1K with a service rifle legal M1A is 197-8X. I shot that in a long range match at WTBn Quantico, on range 4 some years ago. The diameter of the X ring of the NRA LR target is ten inches, and the ten ring is twenty inches diameter. 7zero1 out. |

Last I read, and it's been a while the world record group at a 50cal match was a little over 4"
At 1800 yards, this would be about 8", all things being equal. Thus your friend has been consistently shooting world record groups routinely Perhaps he should enter a match

VERY VERY few people are actually capable of shooting 1/2 minute and a 5 inch group at 1800 yards is well below a 1/2 minute. Let alone doing it with a Barret.

I can think of about 10 places where I can go shoot at 1000yds or more within 15 minutes of my house. Also, this doesn't really have much to do with this thread, but here is my wife's target from 302yds. It was the first time she had shot my hunting rifle and probably the only time she's shot any farther than 50 yards or so.

At the 50 cal match I went to this month, I did not see a Barrett. I did notice a couple shooters were shooting the Armalite AR-50A1.
About 20 rifles present at the match. Most 5 shot groups were around 10-12 inches. The World record holder, Lee Rasmussen, about 5 inch groups. |

| We were at the range a couple of weeks ago. I brought the kids with me so I stayed down on the pistol/rimfire range with the kids and my Dad went up to the rifle range. So after we are all done he comes back down to the lower range and is telling me that a guy there is claiming he can shoot .6" groups at 1k with his .308 and a 10x super sniper scope. I told him that whatever that guy told him to just forget it because that guy was Full of shit. The worst part is the RO was there backing up his claims sating he saw the guy do it several times. |
