My laptop is about 4 years old and now has a problem. When I try to turn it on, it flashes a blue screen that has an error message saying "Unmountable Boot Volume" or something like that. Ideas? Is it fubar?

Hard drive is probably going tits up..

If you have the windows CD, slap that bitch in the drive and boot from the CD. hit "r" on the keyboard for recovery console. type "chkdsk /r" and hit enter. When it's done reboot the computer. It should work.

ETA: Back up your shit and buy a new hard drive.

Do you have a usb drive or camera card in it?

Mine does this if there is a usb drive in because it tries to boot from it.

This isn't something to be messing around with yourself, specially if you've got important data on the drive that hasn't been backed up. Get it to someone who can attempt to save your data then see if the drive is repairable.

If there's no important data on the drive AND you've got your system recovery disks, or are willing to order them, first boot to the recovery console and do a "chkdsk /r". If that doesn't work do "fixboot". If that doesn't work you'll either need to take it to the aforementioned professional, or just replace the hard disk.
