Let's say you woke up today just like any other day.....and then you lost your job and was given a quarter of a million dollars.

What would you do?
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:19:48 AM EDT
I would go find another job.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:20:44 AM EDT

File for unemployment $$$.
Pay off house and wife's car
Go to Hawaii for a few days to chill.
When I got back I'd try to find a new job.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:21:32 AM EDT
Pay off the house, buy a Parker 410, and go dove hunting until I felt like finding another job.

Thats just me though.

Invest most of the money. Put some in the bank. Maybe spend $10,000-$20,000 on some new toys. Take a couple of weeks off. Go find another job.

Order a pizza and some wine, to be delivered.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:22:36 AM EDT
put the money in the bank

Spend the next 2-3 years writing a book and hanging out with my wife.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:24:17 AM EDT
Pay off any debts but the house.

Buy a AK 74 and about 20k of russian surp ammo.

Shoot about half of the ammo.

Go look for a new job.

The unasked question is what people do when they win the lottery. The study shows that they 1. buy a new car, 2 buy a house, 3. simply expand their existing life style.

I assume OP won. So this is what you do:
1. don't tell anyone, including your girlfriend/boyfriend.
2. pay off your existing bills.
3. fix everything that you have that is broken.
4. hire some people to help you sort out what you don't use, don't want, or want to give away.
5. pay your taxes and some regular bills in advance.
6. get all of your deferred dental and medical work done.

Now, how much of that $250,000 is left?

2 chicks, man...2 chicks.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:26:21 AM EDT
I just read about people retiring in belize on single person social security($1500/month for food rent transportation etc).

Off that $250,000 you could stay 13 years by my calculations

Couldn't file for UE benefits with that chunk of change coming your way.

That being said, in what dream world would you be fired/laid off and suddenly get a check for 250k?

Aruba or Grand Cayman Islands.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:31:11 AM EDT
Myself I'd start trying to invest in ways to grow that 1/4 mill into a million and a 1/4..As fast as I could... And do it again and again...
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:31:31 AM EDT
If I was that lucky, I would buy 250k lottery tickets and be a billinonaire.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:32:19 AM EDT
I'd invest most of the money, allowing around 15k for fun. Then I'd go get another job so as not to waste the invested money. It really isn't very much cash compared to the cost of living.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 11:44:26 AM EDT
Pay off all my debts, put the rest in teh bank earning interest for retirement. Find another job ASAP and pretend like I never got the gift (until retirement of course).

For upper level corporate executives in big companies $250k would be a drop in the bucket compared to what they will get when finally shown the door. Try tens of millions or more.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 1:10:13 PM EDT
1. File for unemployment
2. Pay off house & other small debts ($125K would do it)
3. Update resume and send out to 200 employers.
4. Wait to spend the other $100K. Probably keep it as a huge rainy-day fund.

This. $250K isn't even close to enough for me to retire.

I'd pay off a few debts and buy a used pickup - I'm looking for a truck already.

I might be tempted to start a business doing NC-style Pig Pickin' catering, but I'd still look for another day job.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 1:30:25 PM EDT
In my current situation I would just pay cash for a house and a little bit of property and go find a new job. Without a mortgage, just about any job would carry me through for a while assuming I didn't change my lifestyle, which I don't think I would.

A quarter mil is a good chunk of change, don't get me wrong, but it's not enough to retire and live the good life all by itself.

I'd get me a six pack of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. Love that stuff. Hey I can do that anyways! Maybe I am a rich man!
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 1:47:38 PM EDT
Apply for another job.

Pay off all debt and car loan, $2k total.

Set aside $20k for the rest of my college expenses.

Spend $28k on an AR, ammo, tactical gear set up, NV, new snowboard equipment, new rims and tires for the car and SCUBA gear.

Invest $100k and not touch it for retirement, place the other $100k in 12 rolling over CDs (1 each month) as my rainy day fund/retirement money.

Basically I'd spend $50k and save the rest.

Yep. I would pay off my debts and go find a job doing something I actually enjoy as opposed to feeling trapped in a job because I gots to make the bills.

Pay off all debt, acquire some solid, long lasting assets, invest.

some of it would go toward fun: maybe 1-3%

Pay off house and cars and go back to cleaning pools for $7.50 an hour and school full time on the GI Bill.
