Let's say you woke up today just like any other day.....and then you lost your job and was given a quarter of a million dollars. What would you do? |
|
The unasked question is what people do when they win the lottery. The study shows that they 1. buy a new car, 2 buy a house, 3. simply expand their existing life style.
I assume OP won. So this is what you do: 1. don't tell anyone, including your girlfriend/boyfriend. 2. pay off your existing bills. 3. fix everything that you have that is broken. 4. hire some people to help you sort out what you don't use, don't want, or want to give away. 5. pay your taxes and some regular bills in advance. 6. get all of your deferred dental and medical work done. Now, how much of that $250,000 is left? |
|
Quoted:
File for unemployment $$$. Pay off house and wife's car Go to Hawaii for a few days to chill. When I got back I'd try to find a new job. Couldn't file for UE benefits with that chunk of change coming your way. That being said, in what dream world would you be fired/laid off and suddenly get a check for 250k? |

For upper level corporate executives in big companies $250k would be a drop in the bucket compared to what they will get when finally shown the door. Try tens of millions or more. |

Quoted: I would go find another job. This. $250K isn't even close to enough for me to retire. I'd pay off a few debts and buy a used pickup - I'm looking for a truck already. I might be tempted to start a business doing NC-style Pig Pickin' catering, but I'd still look for another day job. |
|
In my current situation I would just pay cash for a house and a little bit of property and go find a new job. Without a mortgage, just about any job would carry me through for a while assuming I didn't change my lifestyle, which I don't think I would.
A quarter mil is a good chunk of change, don't get me wrong, but it's not enough to retire and live the good life all by itself. |
FTW Realistically, Buy a 10+ acres of land put a small house on it and then have my attorney file for an Allodial title Still work at my job still use my GI bill and get a degree any extra money into savings not a 401k don't want the fucking man getting it |
|
Apply for another job. Pay off all debt and car loan, $2k total. Set aside $20k for the rest of my college expenses. Spend $28k on an AR, ammo, tactical gear set up, NV, new snowboard equipment, new rims and tires for the car and SCUBA gear. Invest $100k and not touch it for retirement, place the other $100k in 12 rolling over CDs (1 each month) as my rainy day fund/retirement money. Basically I'd spend $50k and save the rest. |

I would pay off my debts and go find a job doing something I actually enjoy as opposed to feeling trapped in a job because I gots to make the bills. |
