I was talking with a co-worker last night about surround sound systems and the layout of my place. For the way my living room is setup he recommended 2 "floor speakers" just to set them up next to my TV and that even if its not surround sound per-say its still going to be better then the standard TV speakers (Typically TV speakers suck for the most part now adays). Anyway we got to talking and he was saying how he had an extra set of older Sony Floor speakers (Duel 12 ich subs, a mid, and a tweeter) that if he asked his wife about and that if she said yes he'd be willing to part with. (he sent her a text and she said she'd be okay with it)

These are not them, but a picture I found of the same type of speakers using google, he sent me a pic on my phone and they look exactly the same.

He says they are in great condition and if I'm interested I can come check them out. He said he'd sell both of them for 80 dollars. Only down side is I'd have to get a receiver before I could use them.

Is this a good deal or would it be best just to go out and buy a medium range Surround Sound system (with receiver) for 200 dollars more?

Old school speakers like that sound decent but take up a ton of space. They also only provide you with a stereo setup vs 5.1 surround like you probably are looking for.

Surround sound setups are so affordable that I would just go with that. Often you even get the build in CD/DVD and tuner along with the receiver and surround so your set.

Id skip them

Yeah, the space thing is what had me..... If they were way worth it then I was probably going to jump on them. But its not really what I was looking for

These types of speakers are almost always a better option than the home theater in a box options. Provided that you have enough space to put them in your room. I recently went to using a speaker bar and a small sub and I wish I could go back to my floor standing setup, the sound was so much better.

Make sure you take the grill off of the speakers you are buying from your friend to see if they aren't blown. Unless of course you trust your friend enough to take his word for it.

Good luck!

I've never been particularly impressed with $300 surround systems.

I'd get those Sony speakers, a receiver, and add more components as your budget allows.

I would wait. Also I wouldnt buy a bargain bin surround sound setup but I do believe a good quality surround sound system will fill the bill in both the music and movie rolls your looking for
