| Why all the trouble to erase plate numbers in pics when hundreds see it every day? Just asking. What can be found from a plate number by the public? |

Paranoia, but people can find out lots from your plate...Name and address of the person it's registered to, etc... I do it sometimes, but I'm too lazy to blur it most times.

I can get your name, address and the names, makes of vehicles and plate numbers of other people who reside at your residence all from your license plate number. From there, I can find out a lot more about you and those who live with you. That's why I gotta stop being lazy and blurring it all the time. ![]() |

Just asking. Saw several pics this past week with blurred plates. Just thinking how many people see my plate in a day. |

I assume there is something like this in the USA, But here in NZ there are sites like this :
I don't want photos of a car I have on a gun site tracked back to where I live, and be a target for theft [not my plate, just a random number] Random Number plate lookup |

IMO, People blur their plates online because they actually exchange information (many times personal information) that wouldn't normally be exchanged in the course of driving.

when selling a vehicle you list everything on it, including security systems and any modifications, such as cd player, ipod, navigation....from the license plate the crooks can shop online for an easy target(aka you), they will know exactly how to get into your car, and what is needed in order to bypass your security....also if they contact you they can find out when you'll be at home, work, vacation, making it evan easier to steal your chit......
Theif: "hey i was calling about that sweet camaro you had for sale on (random website) you: "yeah its still available" Theif: "can you tell me about it?" you:" well its got (blah blah blah)" Theif: "does it have an alarm or anything?" you: "no" Theif: "can i come by on saturday and take a look?" you: "saturday isnt really good for me, taking the misses to the beach" Theif:"thats nice of you, dont scratch the camaro, im really interested" you: "oh im not taking the camaro, we're gonna take the wifes car" the thief is already at home with your address, list of parts hes already finding buyers for, knows you wont be home and the car is all alone unprotected by any alarm... |

I use an online source I have an account with. If you pay bills, have a mortgage, insurance, etc. it's real easy to find you and get all your info.(SS#, DOB, info for everyone you live with) Register your vehicles to a P.O. Box if your state allows it. If they don't allow it rent a box at a UPS store where you can use their street address and list your box number as "Apartment# ___" on your dmv paperwork. As long as it's in the same area you live in and you're not doing it to get a cheaper insurance rate. It varies by state but I know NY allows it. |
