Friend of a friend has someone stalking him.  They followed him into another state in the middle of nowhere and told him about surrounding that could only be known by being there in person.  Friend has never gotten visual and has no idea who it could be.  His family ran an online trace (kid is like 17) that said its a restricted number.  A minute later the stalker later he got a text that said "not gonna work"

thinking of folling him and picking out his tail and dealing with it accordingly.  I dont know how this person is doing this or why, but any help would be appreciated.  I have the number.  Thanx guys.

no they proved that there are really there in person... we dont know why.  Im thinking of getting a police friend to trace the number if he can pull a few strings and at least get a name.  Im also thinking of tailing my friend and picking out the stalker - process of elim.

Stop trying to play Spook, and call the cops.

If the kid seriously is a stalker, then a paper trail at the local PD will be priceless.

he somehow knew that the nuber(im guessing its a random rerouted number) got a trace ran on it.

Edit - just found out the number is in the jurisdiction of a sherrif buddy of mine  This could be epic.

Couple of questions...

1.  Has the stalker made any threats or insinuations of violence or anything illegal?

2.  Has the situation crossed state lines?

3.  Has the kid checked his vehicle for tracking devices?

Honestly, it sounds like a hoax.  But, to err on the side of caution, it needs to be addressed if in fact it is a real situation.  Also, have your friends friend keep all text messages and he should not answer the phone for the perp at all.  Make the guy leave VM.  This will provide him with critical evidence when he needs it.

Get the police involved NOW.  The kids parents need to report the situation and stress that the kid is a minor.  Get a case number and keep it updated with any and all information.

I think it means the stalker texted him a minute later saying the trace wasn't going to work.

Or you could call Michael Weston. He has lots of experience in dealing with these types of things.

In all seriousness, I'd probably get the cops involved. Even if they don't catch the perp, it'll probably get the bullshit to stop.

1 - not that i know of
2 - yes
3 dont know, doesnt matter, person has proved that he was watching him with eyes, could have been didstance, but GPS, even live satalite feed would not provide the info this person had.

One of my first assumptions would be that the target's personal cell phone has malware running on it - allowing someone to monitor calls, texts, and GPS location data.

Ditch the phone and see if this affects the ability for the stalker to follow.  Or set a trap assuming that the phone is being monitored.

No if you read, there were situations that hacking/tacking would not help.  They talked about horses in a field a long way off that stopped walking.  Ya cant hear/see that from a phone.

This is what I'm thinking.

Since the situation has crossed state lines, go directly to the FBI.  If it were me, I'd be handling it in a totally different way but that is me and I don't recommend that to anyone.  Sadly, the police and FBI won't be able to do too much to help at this point unless the perp does something more threatening.

I doubt either can or will get involved because no crime has been committed.

I did a little research on cell phone bugs when we suspected a friend could have had their cell phone compromised by someone. Seems some cell phones can be remotely turned on to function as a mic. Perpetrator needs to have access to the phone for a short time to program it. Ditch or replace the phone now. I don't allow mine out of my grasp. Also, modified GPS units and bugs planted in cars can transmit location to a remote location.
If the stalker is indeed able to eavesdrop on cell phone conversations, creative use of that knowledge my be used to set the person up to be exposed/confronted. I expect someone here will have more experience/knowledge of this than me.

Umm...I'd be willing to wager a crime has been committed. If the microphone was hacked, I'm sure that would fall under some sort of unauthorized wire tapping. Also harassment is a crime, and if it's been going down as advertised, it's fair to say it's definitely harassment. The perp has certainly shown complete disregard for the victim's right to privacy.

Edit: Since the OP is in OH, I did a quick google search for the stalking laws in OH. It appears the perp could be charged with menacing by stalking if the OP's friend of a friend can show that it has caused him mental distress, which as I said, if the events happened as the OP has stated, any reasonable person would have some amount of mental distress over it.

He needs to establish a history.  That's why he needs to get a case number.  They won't be able to arrest anyone but they can build a profile on the person and gather information that might help should things go sideways in the future.

The family needs to get the LEO's involved right away. That way there is documentation of the stalking/harassment going on. That will be priceless if they end up needing to take care of the issue themselves. As in if the stalker ends up crawling thru a window and is on the recieving end of a mag dump. Having the documentation will be for the following court case.

Paper trail - in case they need to kill someone.
Rental car - eliminates tracking device.
Burner cell phone - give only family the number.  Someone else calls it, you've got a mole.
Autoloading centerfire handgun of choice, plus three mags - on the body whenever not in water or sleeping.
Autoloading centerfire rifle of choice, plus six mags - in vehicle.
- the above 3 items should be issued/given to all family members.
Leave of absence from work/school - too vulnerable, too predictable, too many innocent bystanders.

Next time the stalker rings, anger them into saying/doing something stupid.  If you can record, so much the better.  I'd rather have to deal with one angry psycho coming after me in an environment I can control than a stalker with unknown intentions hanging around in the background.  I'm defenseless at work, but you'd have to be the 82nd Airborne or Sheik Kaboommie and the 101 Exploding Goatherders to be a serious threat to me and mine in our home.

The only way he could have known you did an online lookup was if his computer was compromised also. I'd run malware bytes and hijack this and see whats up. Make sure they are both updated when you do this.
