We all know about the Google ads on Youtube. Personally, I find them to be a minor irritant, but this is the internet and people got to make money some how. What really pisses me of is the 30 second ads that sometime pop up before the videos, but that's a whole other thread.

Up until recently, they have seemed to be random ads. About a week ago I bought a scope at tacticalstore.com. Here's where the tin foil comes on. Ever sense then, every time I watch a Youtube video, the only ad that has popped up, has been an ad for tacticalstore. Someone is watching my I.P. and seeing where I go, or tacticalstore gave my I.P. to Google after shopping there. Either way I'm not happy about this.

Is my tin foil on too tight, or should I drop off the grid and live like Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State?

I can't wait until Google starts making hardware so I can run Google Chrome on my Google OS on my Google hardware with internets supplied by Google ISP and my phone from Google with Android and... etc

HAIL GOOGLE!  I can't wait until they finally develop their systems enough so that it will always tell me what to do and I never have to think!

Spyware.

Run Firefox with Adblock and Noscript and clean regularly with Spybot Search and Destroy.

I do, and it went down hill after they took over. However, Google's ownership of Youtube does not explain how they are tracking me.

Well Chrome checks what you browse and sends you ads based on what you look at (minus porn).

I don't know how Firefox does it, but Firefox has been going downhill and I haven't followed it for a while.

They must get the ads based on your browsing/cookie history in the browser.

All browsers do it now, I guess.

I'll be damned. I just cleared everything, (cache, cookies, etc.) and Youtube doesn't have the tacticalstore ads anymore. I guess it was my fault

I'm still going to blame big brother though

I deny everything in NoScript by default, only allowing the absolute minimum to display a page.  That takes care of Analytics and all the rest of the tracking sites.

They're probably flash cookies.  Clearing cookies the normal way doesn't touch those.

The BetterPrivacy add-on takes care of flash cookies, clearing them when you exit the browser.

Beef Taco add-on takes care of a lot of tracking as well by setting setting a bunch of behavioral tracking site cookies to "opt out" and then making them permanent on your system.  That way when your system crosses paths with one of these sites, it will get an opt-out of tracking message rather than the default opt-in.

Hey OP:

Go search the string, "google analytics"

Essentially, google builds a profile based on your surfing habits and custom tailors your ads to things that may interest you.

You can see this easily if you use Gmail.  Simple open an email you've received and you'll see the ad line at the top of your inbox is custom tailored to something or another in the email's body or subject.

Now that you've got that edjumication down, go back to your referenced tactical store, but this time using Firefox and running the Firefox app Ghostery.  You'll see at the top left of your screen that the website is running google analytics.

Yes - your tinfoil is too tight.

Google (and many other services) have stored persistent cookies on your PC that it uses to serve you targeted ads.  Google also notes your IP - as well as scans your Gmail for keywords and sells that information to potential advertisers that are interested in whatever you may buy based upon your web habits.
