Alright ARFCOM...I'll default to you all on this one.  Just got a new laptop, and am wondering what the best anti-virus/spyware programs to have loaded are.

Usually on a new computer I'll install the following:

AVG Anti-virus free edition
Spybot S&D

iTunes
VLC
Skype
MS Office

Tell me what to add!

iTunes?  WTF over.

MSE is better than AVG
Spybot S&D is rendered useless compared to a much better Malwarebytes.

I urge you to try LinuxMint.  Install it in Windows through the CD installer, and try it for a week.

Barring that, Avast!, AVG, and Avira are the three Antivirus packages I suggest to my family and friends.

Mint 9 KDE is excellent.  Looks good and runs better.

I have not used KDE for many years, but I agree; Linux Mint is nice.

Also I agree with another poster; ditch AVG and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

And I also agree on Google Earth...I just flew from Cheyenne to Yellowstone in the F-16 Good time waster.

I run Mint 9 x 64 Gnome on my backup HD.  It's pretty good.  The KDE version is really sexy and runs real smooth.

I suggest to the OP he dual boot Windoze and Mint.  If there is a problem with Windows you can boot to Linux and keep going.

I also suggest getting a 4 or 8 gb flash drive and install Mint 9 to it.

It can be used on any computer that can boot from USB.  You can run on someone else's computer with your bookmarks, settings etc.

In case of a catastrophic crash or HD failure, the flash drive operating system will run your computer even without a HD present.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a freebie that is lighter and better than AVG, for the time being anyway.

Malwarebytes is a good freebie to have.

Open Office unless you have a real need for MS Office apps.

VLC like you said.

Chrome and Firefox.

Virtual Box

Dump AVG, get Avira free.

Yep.  I actually like Windows 7 quite a bit, it's the best thing that Microsoft has put out since Win98SE.  My last laptop was ArchLinux, and when Win7 RC came out, I installed it alongside.  I just bought a new laptop about 2 weeks ago, and it has Win7 Ultimate on it, and I do all my programming in a LinuxMint VM.

Historically, MS can't seem to follow a good product with a good product, though, so I'm sure that once Windows 7 starts to show its age, I'll be back using Linxu full-time for another 10 years or so.
