Leave it alone. The 7.3 has enough power to pull anything you hook on to, and will run forever. The biggest problem diesel owners have is screwing around putting a chip in it usually causing overboost of the turbo, leading to MAJOR engine problems like blown head gaskets and blowing a turbo. If you're looking for gas mileage, remember you are driving a diesel, not a Prius, but it's the price you pay for driving something with a set of balls behind it. You also mentioned the more black smoke the better, but it just unburnt fuel , contidicting your wanted increased fuel mileage.
I drove a 7.3 for ten years and it had over 390,000 miles on it stock, before it died. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Just my 2 cents though. |

I have an early 2003 with the 7.3, and have had the Superchips 1705 tuner on it since it turned about 400 miles...basically the truck was brand new. I have 154,000 miles on the odometer, and have not had any issues. I drive in the Tow/Performance setting for day to day, and the Tow/Safe when pulling the Toyhauler. Make sure you install a quality set of gauges with at least an exhaust temp gauge, then drive it by the gauge. A 4" exhaust and a better air filter / intake will also help deal with the tuners extra fuel. I know some think that a thick black cloud of smoke is cool...but in reality, it's wasted fuel, caused by an over rich environment. I like my 7.3, it's a Tow Beast, towing our 13,000lb toyhauler all over the country, without a hicup. 2003 F-350 SD, 7.3 PSD, Auto, CC, LB, SRW, FX4, 4.10:1 Genuine Gear Ring and Pinions, Detroit Truetrac Differentials F&R, FabTech Ladder Bars, SuperChips 1705, Magnaflow 4" Exhaust, Ford AIS Air Cleaner, ISSPRO Boost, Trans, and EGT Guages, XM, Ford AIC, Brite Box, 203* T-Stat and Billet Housing, Tru-Cool 4739 MAX, ProComp StageII 4" Lift on Eagle 589's with 35x12.50x16.5 BFG AT KO's, WeatherGuard Toolbox, Rhino Liner, B&W Turnover w/Companion 5th Wheel Hitch & Firestone Ride Rite Airbags, PacBrake PRXB. |
