I took my acog into the UPS store near my house to ship it to Trijicon for some repairs. When the woman behind the counter asked me what it was, I told her.

Big mistake.

She had been holding it in her hand, and the instant I told her it was a rifle scope you'd have thought it was made out of snot.

They were nice enough about it but told me they couldn't ship ANY gun part or they could have their license revoked. They informed me I would have to find one of the main UPS hubs in order to ship it.

So I did.

I don't think the lady at the main hub would have cared if it were a claymore mine. I paid nearly $20 less to ship it than I had similar items from the UPS store AND it gets there in 2 days with standard ground shipping.

Lesson learned: don't bother with the UPS stores you see in strip malls everywhere. They are pussies and will also charge you way more than necessary.

The local PO also handles UPS... They charged me $5 less for the same item to the same address than the UPS Store.  Hmmm.

UPS store people just make up whatever rules seem convenient.

I once walked into a UPS store in Vegas with a Swedish Mauser, uncased.  Guy behind the counter said "Neat gun.  Where do you want it shipped?"

I had a similar experience trying to ship a stock back to McMillan.  He asked me repeatedly if it was a gun and I told him no it was not but refused to tell him what was inside.  After the 3rd time, I asked him if I looked like I wanted to spend 25 years in prison.  Finally he shipped the package but was convinced I was doing something illegal.

You would have thought I was shipping a nuclear weapon.

The UPS Stores suck and are a rip off.

IIRC, the UPS store is kinda like a licensed re-seller for UPS services, that's why you pay more...for the more convenient location (than the hub or distribution center) and for the libtard behind the counter to help pack your shit, sell cushioning material, sell the box, and tape it all nice and neat.  Customer counter at the distribution center, they don't do any of that, so you pay lower rates.  I typically ship 30-40 lb. boxes so USPS can't really help me, but to ship an ACOG, I'd have used their priority mail flat rate boxes with insurance and delivery confirmation and probably paid less than UPS' lowest rate.  FWIW...YMMV

I was shipping my Thunder Ranch Special back to Les Baer to get some work done to it.  So I explain to the UPS counter guy it's a firearm going back to the manufacturer, and he says "I've never heard of Les Baer Customs guns, let me take a look at it."  The box wasn't tape shut yet, so I whip this badass looking 1911 out at the counter, with everybody else standing in line and the coutner people there looking at it.  The counter guy is all like "OK, OK, put it back in the box!!!"

I'm pretty sure she was bullshitting you. People at various shipping stores/locations whether it be UPS, USPS, or FedEx like to make up bullshit they have no idea about. It's best to do your homework yourself first. They shouldn't have had a problem shipping your scope.

Cool.  So if they lose your "machine parts" and you file a claim, do you lie and tell them what "machine parts" they lost?  Do you say "oops, did I say machine parts?  I meant an ACOG"?  Do you hope after you lie to them, they don't find the missing package that was infact an ACOG and find out you lied and said it was "machine parts"?

Technically a machine is something that does work. (A machine is a device that uses energy to perform some activity)
Pulling the trigger on a rifle actuates that it took energy to perform another activity.
A rifle is a machine, in a broad term. It's not a lie. It's a generalization.

Think of how many different types of machines there are and get back to us.

The UPS Stores are a franchise, and the rules they are required to operate under WRT guns and parts suck.

A few years ago I tried to ship an upper via a UPS Store. The owner/operator was a former gunsmith and an avid firearm enthusiast.... Still, no shipping guns or parts via a UPS Store.

The UPS corporation will test the UPS Stores, and they can have their franchise pulled if they violate the terms that UPS has them working under.

1. You can buy firearms optics from an online store.

2. Many online stores use UPS to deliver optics, rifle parts, etc.

3. Why can't a UPS store return said parts to the vendor thru the UPS system?

We used to have a UPS store here and I would often have to weave my way thru the boxed up firearms to get to the counter. Pawn shops here used the heck out of them, but they went belly up anyway.

I went into one ONCE to find a box long enough to ship a long gun in it. Big mistake.

The guy there asked me what I was trying to ship and I casually said a rifle. Mind you, I didn't have it with me and was only there looking for a box.

I'm pretty sure that telling them it was $1000 worth of "machine parts" isn't going to cut it when it is claim time. They are going to want to know exactly what it was and exactly what it was worth. I wouldn't be shocked if they actually wanted you to provide proof of ownership too. The potential for fraud is way too high for them to just be working under the honor system. I'd imagine they are also keeping an eye out for an excuse not to pay.

I insure the package against loss, not what's in the package.  I set the worth and pay the cost of insuring it.  If I insure a package for $1000 and the package is lost I expect to be paid the amount I insured it for, not what UPS thinks I should get for it.
