..and the MOTHERFUCKING A/C just went out!

Shit!

The fan motor on the compressor unit just seized up.  I turned all the window units upstairs on high, but there is no unit in here (my office).  It will be getting HOT in here soon.

The wife is on the phone to the A/C guy.  Frankly, at 8:00PM on a Saturday night, she is wasting her time.

Ahhh.....

Don't worry about it.

In that heat you probably won't survive the night anyway.

Oddly enough, she got someone on the phone.

They will try to come out in the morning.  I bet they won't be able to get a fan motor until Monday, though.

I have a portable that looks like R2D2 in my bedroom.  We will live though the night.

Might have to spend Sunday in bed, though.

Old house, just one central unit.

That's why we have the window units upstairs.

If you can reach the fan, just give it a little spin.  I've seen more than one electric motor fixed (temporarily) just by being spun free.  Junk build up over time and eventually the armature seizes.  Tapping the outside of the motor or just turning the inside can have it up and running again.

It is still in the upper 90's.  The motor was HOT.  I'm afraid I will fry the compressor.

Feel like figuring it out yourself??? There are a lot of threads about this in the last week... I'm sure ARF could walk you through your A/C fix for half the price of a pro

Figure it out?  It's a motor.  Sure, I could do it...but I will hire a pro.  He will know where to get the motor, I might luck out and he will have one in stock.  Otherwise, it will be Monday.  Which means I would have to take off work to do it.  And burn a PTO day.

Plus, I want him to check the refrigerant, I think it needs a shot.

My A/C unit quit working last summer. Turned out it was only a capacitor which drove the fan that went bad. $30 & about 3 hours later, I was off and running again. Fixed it myself. The cap looked like it was bulged out on the bottom.

It has been miserable today though. I know how you feel. Best of luck in a speedy fix.

You probably just need to replace the capacitor.  They pop in this heat.  $10 fix.  Might require a screw driver.

I live on the other side of the State...on the Colorado River. About 100 miles south of Las Vegas. It's HOT here...usually the hottest livable spot in the USA.

Old desert trick, paleface :  Soak a sheet in water, wring it out, and sleep under it with a fan on you. You'll freeze to death tonight. I've been there...hope the A/C guy gets you fixed up quick!

Cheers...

Mine quit last weekend like that,,, I took the fan motor off and popped the little small cover off of the end of the motor,,,, opposite end of fan blade,,, so I could get to the shaft, put some motor oil on the shaft and got it to spinning freely and put it back on..  It worked for another week..

I completely forgot about it through the week.

last night it went out again,,so I am in the same boat you are in, this time it is gone for good.  Luckly I have some window units, but it is still hot in here..

Do you have a fan??  Yet some linens and blow the fan through it.... Worst similar to a "swamp cooler"   ie... Wet your linens and have a ceiling fan blowing down on your... you will be cool.... (coming from AZ)

Yes, run capacitor.  Open up the case, you can tell if the capacitor is bad just by looking at it.  If it's bulged, it's shot.  Do this before you pay someone.

Every A/C repairman in America is replacing 5 of these a day right now.
