I lived in NY for a few years.

We moved there knowing it was temporary while my wife finished her training.

Did it suck? Yes.

Was it worth it in the end? Yes.

Will I ever live behind enemy lines again? No fucking way.

So to answer your question: We chose to live behind enemy lines for educational/financial reasons and the cost-benefit analysis concluded that we could both deal with 3 years there.

I was born and raised near Albany, but my career search brought me to central NY.  We got into our current home rather cheap, and it would be very inconvenient for me to start over, vocationally.  I've got about 7 more years before I can consider anything like that.

But deep down inside, I'm too stubborn to give up and move.  Other than the downstate influence on politics, laws and taxes, upstate NY is a wonderful place.  Fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling....the forests, the agriculture, the resources, the weather (most of the time) have a lot to offer.  THe more of us that leave, the more that we ensure that the pendulum keeps swinging in one direction.

Economics, school, work for both me and my wife moved me here (from DE).

I love the Midatlantic.  The weather is acceptable, the land and waters are great, the beer is the best in the world and I'm among plenty of friends.

I stay because this is my home.  I figure, it's up to me to clean house of all the politicians and scum.  If I don't do it, nobody else will.  How dare anyone chase me out of my home.  I'm staying and, by God, I will make it better.

That said, I would consider moving back to DE.

Business, commercial property, family, friends, homes, weather (save for this heat ).  I've heard the argument that being able to buy EBR's and other assorted toys trumps all of my reasons.  For me, it just doesn't yet make sense.

It's the business climate that's going to push me out of this state....

There's been a for-sale sign in front of my place for 2.5 years.    In the unlikely event that I can sell, I'm GTFO and heading right over the border to IN.

I can't move too far from the in-laws, but staying close to the border will accomplish that and get me lower taxes, better schools, better housing prices, NFA, CCW, etc...

Except for the gun laws I like it here.  My career is here, my family is here, my life is here.  Someday all of this may change, I have many options available.  Until then I stay here, support my political candidates and doing what I can to bring about some kind of positive change.

1) Family: Im a divorcee... Can't live far away from my daughter, I love her too much. I'd live in a concentration camp for her... Sometime I think I do!

2) Job: Secondary is the job. 14 more years before retirement. At this point I'll stick it out.

In 14-15 years my daughter will be out of College & if she's good..  I'll move to a free state (if there are any left)

I'll do my best to convince her to come with me rather than stay behind enemy lines.

I don't want to leave my girlfriend or family.  My girlfriend just got accepted to a college that's 45 minutes away.

I also recently graduated college, and am trying to find a job so I can move at some point.  My girlfriend has considered also continuing her education at schools in Wisconsin and Indiana, and I have told her I'd be willing to relocate to be closer to her, as neither of us drive.

I used to think that for years as a Mass resident, and NH shooting club member, when I ran into Mass people who said they finally got so fed up they moved to NH due to the gun laws.

Now that the AWB is dead, and I live in NH, it's so refreshing to be able to casually shove a gun in my pocket for $10 every four years, or just load up the trunk with new AR's and brand new 30 round mags, and head to the range without any worry that my trunk is loaded with guns and ammo. Now I run into my local Police chief at the gun store checking out AK's, and I remember in Mass how desperate I was just to get decent preban mags that weren't beat to shit.

The right wing hasn't really left here.  The left wing has moved in like a locust plague.  They're outnumbering us now as NC went from a red state to a blue one this last election.  Maybe some of you guys that will be leaving the "iron curtain" states should come here so that we can tip the balance back toward the red state side. We need all the help we can get.

I'm in NW IN, just an extension of Chicago which places me squarely behind enemy lines, the premise of OP's question.  Nobama carried my county, enough said.

I'm surprised.  I worked in Porter County last summer.  My former boss lives in Westville and one of my former co-workers is from Michigan City.   Then again the former co-worker is a liberal with a side of quasi-vegan.
