I just got a new xbox 360 arcade. This is the model that doesn't have a hard drive. I want a hard drive so I can copy my games to it and so I can play older xbox (not 360) games.
Microsoft wants too much for 60 gb. Am I correct in assuming that I can buy a $10 shell of ebay and a $40 250g HD from newegg an it will just work? |

You can do what you want, but it is a pain in the arse. If all you want to do is play old XBOX games, use a USB thumb drive. The latest update on XBOX 360's let them use a 16GB USB drive as a storage device. This was done in anticipation of the new XBOX 360 S that doesn't have the weird/proprietary memory ports. you can also buy xbox hd's on ebay that have already been flashed with the correct settings to make them work on the xbox. xbox-scene.com has some good intel. |

hmmm, it's been awhile since I've read up on hacks for the 360 HD, but, if I were you, and I just purchased a new 360 Arcade, no way in freaking hell would I do that. Next update, which may be this fall, they will brick every system that has had stuff done to it. Unless there is a new HD hack that is un-detectable, you are risking getting your gamer tag/account banned for good. Buy a used drive off ebay. I snagged a 60 gig drive for 40 or 50 bucks for a buddy a few months back. Safer than messing with your system and angering the Microsoft gods. Good luck.
If you have no plans on ever hooking your 360 up to the net, then disregard the above. That is about the only way you will be safe if you hack your 360. |

For the extra $100 that you're gonna spend on it, you could have gotten the new wifi-enabled 250gb xbox that takes notebook hd's. Very slick...got mine last week. |

OP: yea, you can flash the right firmware to a drive, but it helps to be tech-savvy. heres a guide for ya, i used the same one myself http://digiex.net/computing-section/guides-tutorials/consoles/3152-xbox-360-how-hack-250gb-sata-drive-work-360-a.html#post21373 |

I got this new 360 for $108 out the door from Target. There's a thread about it on slickdeals here. I do not plan to hook it up to the net because my internet sucks (I use mobile broadband stick from Sprint.) BTW Bioshock kicks ass. |

You can find used 20 GB xbox hard drives for cheap; I don't think Microsoft makes them anymore and most people have upgraded to a bigger size. It's what I have and it's just big enough. Look on ebay, or craigs list.
ETA: the only time I hook it up to the internet is for updates to games and to get (free) DLC. ETA2: I just looked on ebay. 20 GB are going for $10-30. |
