Never mind the usual glitches people have.
OS4 changes how the "Home" button works... You can no longer access your "favorites" in your call list via the button. You'll have to select the phone button, then favorites or roll through your contacts. I find this feature, or lack thereof, really friggin' stinks! No more double clicking and selecting who you want to call... Utter bullshit whoever got the bright idea to disable it. Dumb fucking Apple. |

I didn't use it anyway (jailbroken and used it for multitasking anyway) |

Hitting the home button from the main page brings up a worthless search function. This doesn't bother me at all, but there are reports that OS4 is damn near bricking some 3Gs after installation. It seems to fix when you reboot, but I'm still leary. Be advised. I was also told at the AT&T store today that I'd probably be able to pick up an iPhone 4 sometime next MONTH as they dont' know how supply is going to keep up with demand. huzzah! |

Some people have had some luck with pushing it two and holding it down the second time, not me though. I really miss that feature and people who use their's on the job are really going to miss it.
It should have been "Hold" for the multi-tasking, two clicks for the "Favorites", one for the search (which IS pretty worthless), and three for the "voice". The "zoom" feature works pretty well though. I hate iTunes as well!!! Loads slow as shit on my Windows XP PC. I was also told at the AT&T store today that I'd probably be able to pick up an iPhone 4 sometime next MONTH as they dont' know how supply is going to keep up with demand. huzzah! I pre-ordered mine on the 15th just before lunchtime, 10min wait and mine has shipped To be honest, I only bought it for the LED flash, improved battery life, and hopefully improved antenna. What I really wish Apple would have done with OS4 (and I cannot figure out for the life of me why they couldn't) was enable you to move some "setting" to the homepage as an icon... I'd like to have WiFi, Location Services, and more importantly Bluetooth available as icons on the homepage. Push them and the feature turns on, push them and the feature turns off. It's a minor annoyance to have to go through the menus to turn them on/off. I can't understand why Apple couldn't think of this and if you leave them all on, it sucks your battery. |

Funny, I never knew that option existed and I've had my 3G for a couple years. I'm holding off on the upgrade since most of the stuff won't work on a 3G and I may just upgrade assuming my store will have phones. In the meantime I'll rock the last jailbreak and continue to teather and use Cyntact ect |

I never set the double-click on my home button. So it's no biggie to me. I tried it for the hell of it and it brings up search then goes to first page of apps. Will update to OS4 tonight when I get home. How are some of you liking the folder option? Folder option is the main reason I did the upgrade (and I have a 4 due here Thursday). Three screens total, instead of 8, plus a folder for the useless embedded iPhone apps. |

Quoted: Quoted: The folder option is why I want OS4. I have my phone filled with apps and the folders would come in handy. How do you form the folders? Drag an icon on top of another one. It will create a folder and let you rename it if needed. You need to push and hold the icon first. They then begin to "rattle". Then you can drag them on top of each other. |

So my 3Gs will show the wallpaper on the main home screen backgrounds, but not on my wife's 3G. Is this normal? Yes. 3G doesnt support wallpaper. Only because Apple doesn't want it to. Supposed to be a hardware issue. Dunno for sure. Works just fine on a jailbroken phone. Just like tethering. Apple does not want it to work to force people to buy their new shit. |

Apple does not want it to work to force people to buy their new shit. This is what bothers me more about Apple and their products more than anything else. It's my frigging phone, why should I have to "jailbreak" it in order to get it to operate the way I want it to? Same with apps, I should be able to run any app I want without jailbreaking, not just the ones Apple approves. It's bullshit and it's made me avoid their products. And the non removable battery and lousy AT&T service doesn't help any. When my current contract is up I might switch from Blackberry, and I will take another look at the iPhone, but I suspect I'll wind up with an Android phone. Unless BB wows me with something between then and now, which I somehow doubt. |

Multitasking KILLS the battery. I need to see if I can turn it off. My usual routine is to charge the phone on my desk at work, and at night when I go to bed I turn the radios off with airplane mode. This usually results in it losing very little battery over night because the bluetooth, wifi, email checking etc. stops. Last night, the first night after updating to the new os, I did this. The battery that was 93% when I went to bed was 10% when I got up, in airplane mode all night. I can only assume this is because it was "multitasking" all 10 of the apps that I had happened to open up during the day. Not good. |

The multitasking function in iOS-4 doesn't work like an old-school backgrounder, so if you're loosing 83% of your battery overnight, you've got another issue going on. I would do a restore and see if that clears it up. As for double-click, check out tipb's or macrumors' walkthrough for iOS4, there's a doubletap and hold function for favorites (only on the 3GS and iPhone 4, btw). While I think that'll require some getting used to, multitasking > phone-favorites IMHO. iPhone 3G users (like me) won't see any difference in the double click. Still has the menu, brings up favorites, etc. Sean |

Still has the menu, brings up favorites, etc. Sean I agree with Sean. Go to settings and shut off notifications. This will go a long way to save battery life. You wont get auto notifications for emails etc and will have to click refresh or update on your email and other programs, but your battery will last for days. 1. Minimize use of location services Since this requires the use of GPS, using location services sucks more energy from your battery. Use it only when really necessary (that means don't go on Maps just because you're bored). 2. Turn off Push Notifications and Push Mail Although that defies the whole point of having Push, if you're certain you don't need it, turn it off. If you have a Push email account set up, turning the push off temporarily will save some battery. 3. Fetch new data less frequently Your iPhone expends battery life by automatically leaving "sleep" mode and going to look for new emails. Rather than having it set to "Every 15 minutes", go in and set it to "Manually" or "Hourly", since that'll be easier on your battery. 4. Turn off WiFi Both WiFi and "seeking" new WiFi connections drain battery power. Turn them off when not in need of high speed internet. 5. Turn down screen brightness When you're in battery life saver mode, turn the brightness all the way down. It doesn't take a genius to understand that more brightness = more power consumed. 6. Turn off 3G If you're really low on battery, and are willing to do whatever it takes to keep the phone alive for emergency situations, then go and turn off 3G. Hey, EDGE sucks, but it still works. 7. Turn off EQ Applying EQ settings to your iPod apparently drains extra battery. If you're planning on keeping your phone alive all day, turn the EQ settings off. 8. Set Auto-Lock to 1 Minute When you're not using your phone, lock it. And just in case, put your iPhone to the shortest possible auto-lock setting so that it locks automatically (and quickly) when you aren't active. 9. Turn Off Vibrate in Games A lot of games have very frequent vibrations, which drain battery life. If you can, turn them off in the game's settings. 10. Don't download from iTunes or App Store wirelessly Downloading apps and media is hard on the battery. Just wait until you get home and use your computer. 11. Use graphically detailed apps less frequently Games like Need For Speed drain the battery extremely rapidly, so use them sparingly. 12. Stay updated with the latest firmware Apple's minor firmware updates frequently introduce some new methods of functionality which are better on battery life. 13. Don't use bluetooth Bluetooth, whether you're using it to connect to a wireless headset or some A2DP device, is terrible if you want to keep your iPhone alive and breathing for more than a couple hours. |

Thanks for the cut-n-paste, but it doesn't apply in my case. I'm getting the battery drain while the phone is in airplane mode, which shuts off most of those power consuming items. I'm going to try it again tonight but with no apps showing in multitasking area to see if it makes a difference. I realize that it's not true multitasking in that the apps aren't really running unless they need to be doing something, but I'm curious what impact they have on battery life. |
