Just wondering which agency actually does a background check on you when purchasing a firearm.

it isn't really a BG check

It is a run through to make sure your name doesn't pop up in the NCIC (FBI maintained database)

From my understanding, the search spans more than just one database.

Your state police and/or the FBI.  In some states, like VA, the state police do both the state and federal check so the FBI doesn't have to.

IIRC

ETA - yes, your info is run through several databases.  If you come up with no record, it's an instant approval.  If you have a hit, you get delayed so a person can review what you did and decide the final ok to proceed or denial.

Technically the ATF does, but they use the FBI's databases.



In fact, everything the ATF does falls under the FBI's mission statement...duplicity at it's finest.

Just curious, does it only cover convictions?
