Back in the day when I was living in Virginia and North Carolina, I used to get a cherry cola called 'Cheerwine'. Loved it - really good soda. However, you don't see it here in the west all that often.
Fastforward 20 years, and I find Cheerwine in a local store. Huzzah - I buy a four-pack to share with a couple of co-workers who had never heard of it. BLEEECHHHHH! This stuff tastes like over-carbonated cherry-flavored cough syrup. Did Cheerwine undergo a (bad) change in formula in the past 20 years, or did we just get a bad batch? This stuff is AWFUL compared to Cherry Pepsi. |

They still make the original version with cane sugar but you need to look for it in glass bottles. I bought 3 of them just the other day and they were good.
Corn syrup is the reason that colas taste like crap these days. If you look for one's made with sugar instead, you'll be much happier. And if you can't find the original formula Cheerwine, I'll be glad to send you some. It's $1.39 a bottle less shipping. |

Stopped in to a restaurant in Mt. Pleasent, TN a few months back. They had an old general store on one side that had snacks, candy, soda etc. so we picked up a few of these in the glass bottles. It was decent, but not something I'd buy again. They also had Sun Drop |

As a kid, I remember drinking Cherikee Red. I think they pulled it off the market for a while due to the Red dye #40, supposedly it's still available in Ohio & Pa. I remember it being good stuff, but generally speaking that's the case for a lot of things you experience as a kid. You find it later as an adult and it's not as good as you remember it. |
| You can get it or anything else you want on line. just go here: http://www.sodapopstop.com They're behind enemy lines in Los Angeles (Eagle Rock) but they're good people. |

Sundrop is bottled some what close to where I live and a regional item. Sundrop is very easy to find.
You can also find Cheerwine here and there. I like to drink one every now and then. I can buy Dr. Pepper, Sprite, and Sundrop is glass bottles which is bottled local and very fresh! Now that is some good stuff! |

Same experience as the OP. I looooved Cheerwine when I was a kid. I remember wondering why anyone would drink Cherry Coke, which barely had a hint of cherry flavor, when Cheerwine was so much better and had a much stronger cherry taste.
Then I found it again some years later and was like, "bleh, I used to love this?" Maybe as the other poster said, it lost something in the conversion to corn syrup. There's a "Hank's" soda around here that's made with cane sugar. It's fantastic. I never buy it unless it's on sale, though. It's just too expensive to justify. |

Oh we do indeed still have it, and it is good. At our dealership we hold customer appreciation cookouts once a month during warmer weather. Every time we start out with a cooler full of about 60 cans of Cherikee Red. Its all gone in about ten minutes. |

I love the stuff, but they don't sell it here. I haven't had any in years. What part of the state are you in? If your family heads south for vacation (like Hatteras or whatever) keep an eye out. They don't sell it here either (just south of RIC) but down closer to the border and in Carolina you'll find it. |
