What type of steel is used for the cooking surfaces on these griddles?

I would like to get a piece of steel that I could put on my grill outside to cook on? Has anyone else done this?

308 or 316 stainless more than likely. 316 is more rust resistant its also considered to be marine grade stainless.

Any 300 SS will work.  But it needs to be fully annealed, you won't get it to that temperature so it must be ordered that way.  And you are looking at about $5 a pound, at 1/2" thick 304, a pound is a little over 6.8 square inches.  Meaning a piece 2" x 3.4 inches.  Buying rectangular pieces will save you drop charges but you might have a minimum cut charge.

It will have a plasma cut edge with some draft to the kerf but it will be slight.  And most plate has a less than smooth finish, surface grinding will be the best way to correct this.

You want fully annealed, 300 series stainless steels exhibit rapid chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.

Would a regular metal supply shop have this or would it have to be ordered? For surface grinding can it be wet sanded?

Probably ordered.  Call, 1/2" 304 SS isn't too common in areas.

Any steel distributor will stock 304, 316 etc.....but for the size you need you are going to pay about 5x what it's worth for someone to go out and basically cut you a drop - if they will even sell to a walk in.

Your best bet is to find a fab shop that has a drop off irregular size you can pick up cheap. Dont' walk into a metalmart and order it or you'll pay a price closer to gold than stainless.

Where do you live in TX?
