I need to get a wireless network adapter for my computer. I got a way from the phone company and went to an aircard, but it really sucks. My son's laptop is running non stop with a great signal that's being received from a truckstop has a G type right down the road that has free access. What is the best for the money.  Trying to stay as cheap as possible. Under $100.

First thing you want to know is that whatever money you spend today to use the Truckstop's Wireless, could be wasted tomorrow if they decide to lock it down because they noticed that there's these two computers ALWAYS on it.

While you're chewing on that, I'll glance for something I would use. BRB.

This one shows up as $34 in the cart.  Probably would work fine.

It's an open system,, the truckers use it from the parking lot in their rigs and inside the building as well. People that live really close have been using it for years, I just didn't know we could get it since I'm about 5 miles from the truckstop. Oh, and thanks.

There's no way you're picking up a wifi signal 5 miles away, unless you have a VERY directional antenna on a tower, with a clear line of sight to the other antenna.

5 miles?  And your son's laptop picks up the signal?  I really have a hard time believing that is wireless G from 5 miles away.  I have never heard of a G signal that far away,  I would have to believe that you have a neighbor nearby with an open access point.  5 miles is 88 times farther away than G is supposed to be reliable.

ETA: Not to mention there is no way the laptop could transmit a signal strong enough to go 5 miles, and if it did, your son would look like a Thanksgiving turkey.

I've personally done 6 miles. Of course, my side was on a 40' tower, and the other was on a 200' tower. I was also using a parabolic grid antenna (12dbi, IIRC), and a 1W commercial-grade AP.

And there was a lot of packet loss, because I didn't have radio Line Of Sight.

If you don't believe it I don;t give a shit. If your ever in s.c. take I-77 south from charlotte, or north from columbia and take exit 48, head towards Great Falls and travel 5.2 miles( just check it with the odometer when I went to Wendy's), and knock my door. You can then walk in the house and play Aion, Wow, or what ever. IM me before you show up and I'll give you my number so I can give you final directions. I have no reason to lie, and ask a damn question that would have absolutely no relevance in my life. Maybe you've got that much time to waste, but I don't Anyone that is willing to help me out with the technical question I posted thanks very much, all others get a life, your tendencies to lie do not extend to me.

They have a huge tower at least a couple of hundred feet high, on top of a hill that's about 100-150 feet up. It may be an N that they have. The neighbors is listed under their name, and we don;t use it.
