hi all

i am casting a 175gr semi wad for a springfield xdm 40.  the round wont chamber.  i have tried different seating depths and the only thing that i can think of is that the bullet profile cant be used for that pistol.  has anyone used the 145 gr bullet?

is it getting caught up on the ramp, or are the shoulders of the bullet catching? Try a fired shell and a loose bullet and see if the bullet gets pushed into the shell when you try to chamber it. Did you full-length size  the brass?

the bullet doent get pushed into the shell.  it goes up the ramp and then stops

But where and why does it stop? Catching on brass rim or edge of cast bullet? Try to chamber the loose bullet into a fired case. If it is sticking or catching on the lead bullet, it will shove it into the brass and you will know.  Or try loading some bald ammo and see how your finished bullets act.

Are you sizing your bullets or shooting them as-cast?

The auto-lube press will size them and lube them....

Did you do a full-length size on the brass? (trim the brass)

Disassemble your pistol.

Take the barrel and hold it with the muzzle towards the ground and try to drop a round into the chamber.

Does it go all the way in or does it stop before completely chambering?

If it doesn't completely chamber, it could be a bullet too large in diameter to go into the chamber.  It could be that your case has not been crimped enough to chamber fully.

Try crimping a few rounds a little more and see if they will drop into the chamber.

thanks for all of the info,  i will try crimping and trimming the case to make sure.  i will keep you posted of what happens.

Just FYI, I have shot many (hundreds of ?)  thousands of rounds of pistol brass, and I have never trimmed a single case.  Not one.

That is not the problem.

I didn't think automatic rounds were crimped. I do not crimp my .45 auto rounds and the factory rounds are not crimped. Just pressed into a full length sized shell. IIRC the bullets do not have a crimp caneluer.

Taper crimp vs roll crimp like you do with a revolver. At least I hope I have it right, I'm pretty buzzed.

That is correct.

They should be taper crimped.  Cases are usually slightly belled to allow easy bullet seating.  If they are not crimped at all, they will not go into the chamber.

I trim my .45 colt brass every other loading. It does need it occasionally. Never on the .45 ACP. Yes, a taper crimp.

I load 175 grain and 155 grain LSWC for both my XD40 and XDM-40. I've fired approx. 2000 rounds of SWC through each with zero fails to feed.  How deep are you seating your rounds?  For a SWC, there should be only about a thumbnail thickness of ogive above the case mouth.
