Mine for today: "Pitched Battle." I always thought it meant a 'ferocious battle." Not at all. A pitched battle is a battle where both sides choose to fight at a chosen location and time and where either side has the option to disengage either before the battle starts, or shortly after the first armed exchanges.[1] The term is related to a 'pitch,' referring to the field in sporting events, especially rugby and soccer, with the same connotation of two 'teams' competing by the traditional methods of the 'sport.'
