I tried posting this in the commando forum, maybe I will have better luck here.

I just got a toshiba netbook and want an external cd. This will be used mostly for backing up, I'm not going to be watching hi-def on my netbook.

THere are some on amazon for less than 20 bucks but I can't tell if they are windows 7 compatible and I have windows 7 home premium. I saw one for around 50 bucks that states it does not need a driver, which should make it windows 7 compatible right?

I thought you could get an external cd drive the same way you get an external hard drive, but I guess there aren't many windows 7 drivers yet?

The model netbook is the Satellite T115D-S1120. THe number of toshiba netbook configurations is greater than the national debt so that info might be of limited usefulness.

For something like that I'd look on newegg and read the reviews carefully.

I've had good luck with my external DVDRW.  Brand is Lite-On.

Doen't they have to have windows 7 compatible drivers? I was reading a review of one on amazon and you supposably don't need a driver just to read. It had 2 usb cords, which is no problem, I have 2 side by side.

Ideally the manufacturer will provide Win7 drivers.
I didn't need it for my Lite-on though, Win7 supported it without getting drivers elsewhere.

welp, I got one. I used it to install some virus protecton other than norton. Now that norton is off my computer my problems seem to have gone away.

Several friends and myself have an LG external super multi dvd rewriter. Works flawlessly under windows or linux

Plextors are my favorite.  But that being said... I've also used a good number of cheap drives, and they've worked fine.  A bit slower, and some have died early, but they've all worked.
