I am writing a book, under contract to Knopf, that might interest AR-15 shooters.

As a lifelong shooter and hunter, I’ve always been bothered by how little the shooting and non-shooting world know about each other. In fact, they are often needlessly hostile to each other. The book I am writing will take the reader deep inside the shooter’s world to explain it for non-shooters.

It seems to me that people are drawn to firearms for all kinds of reasons. For some, it’s mostly a matter of self-defense. For others, it’s a fondness for history. Some firearms enthusiasts are motivated mostly by a reverence for the Second Amendment, and others for hunting and other shooting sports. Though all of us are drawn to firearms for a variety of reasons, usually one stands out for each of us. My book will profile one shooter who represents each of these elements of firearms attraction. By going deep inside one person –– telling that person’s whole life story and how shooting fits into it –– I’m to demystify and de-vilify guns for those who have little experience with them.

One element of attraction to firearms that seems very important is that guns are simply cool. They are exquisitely engineered, finely machined devices that are very satisfying to handle and operate. (That's a big reason I like them.) A lot of gun owners I meet are like the bicycle freaks I know; they like cool stuff.

The AR-15 is the ultimate cool gun, especially with all the accessories people can buy to hang on them. So I am looking for AR-15 enthusiasts who aren't necessarily  hunters, aren't primarily motivated to own  ARs because they believe that a political cataclysm is nigh,  and aren't necessarily competitive shooters –– but who own AR-15s simply because it's a cool thing to own, and fun to shoot.

If you fit the bill, and are willing to be interviewed for my book, please send an email to [email protected]. (You can read about me, and read my other work, at www.danbaum.com) I can explain the project to you in more detail then.

Thank you.
