The PTR91 rifles are probably one of the best values going in the .308 market...soft shooting and capable of showoff groups right out of the box.

They're regarded as the best G3 knock-off.  They're also heavy as hell.  Built like a tank and just as robust.

My dad has a like new PTR91 with Navy lower and about 21 magazines to go with it. PM me if you're interested. Fired less than 50 rounds through it.

Tread carefully around new ones.  I've heard reports of problems with the newer models.

However, ones that are a few years old (which sold for $700 or so - half the current going price) are fine.

Had a Century C91 that I loved.  It broke in a remarkable and irreparable way.  After returning it under warranty, I swore that someday I'd own another G3 pattern rifle again.  The PTR91 is the top of that list.

I got one years ago, when they were on sale for $600 at Sarco.  It was the basic version, no frills.  Great gun for the money.  The one downside was the narrow handguard that came with the rifle––I shot a mag or two rapid fire and the guard got so hot it warped.  I wound up replacing it with a wide handguard, then discovered I'd broken the 922 rule, so I put an American trigger, sear and hammer in it to get back in compliance, and had Bill Springfield do a trigger job.  Also put a bipod and scope on it.  I wouldn't say it's a soft shooter, it beats up my shoulder pretty good.  I've heard the version with collapsible stock is very harsh.

PTR91.com used to sell a special tool for setting the rear drum sight, I don't think they make/sell it anymore.  People have come up with several ways to do it themselves.

I was at the local fun shop one day, and watched a guy buy a new HK 91.  He was quite pleased with himself.  I was tickled too, thinking that I had basically the same gun for less than a third of what he paid.

If I had the money for a HK sear, I would love to turn one into a host.  Seems like a cool rifle; if it had an easy way to mount optics, I'd have one.

I found an inexpensive claw mount at Cheaper Than Dirt years ago (also where I found the bipod, made for attachment to the wide handguard), I put a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 scope on mine.  It works well and holds zero.

If you are or know someone who is a subscriber to Small Arms Review, the newest issue, July 2010, has an article covering the 91 and derivatives.

SAR isn't your typical gun rag; it's the only one I susbscribe to, and take seriously. I haven't read the article, but you might do well to check it out.
