Sneaky bastages, now they have a new money getting scheme. They don't even want to talk to the man of the house, they immediately ask for the woman. Guess they figure they are easier marks to pull money from. Told the caller he struck out as there IS no lady of the house and I don't donate to ANY cold callers no matter who they may be. Told him to piss off and hung up on him.
Yeah yeah, I know the FOP hires some third party and IMHO, I have even less use for any entity that does that. Bleh, must be the season, just got ANOTHER cold "gimme money" call. Unlisted number so they are just running the numbers. |

Next time they call ask them how much of the donation actually goes to the FOP or FD it's usually MUCH less than 10%.. I got a call once from one of those Firms telling me that they were represengint MY PBA local...and we do not use that crap. I got all the information i could, then informed them that they were committing fraud...the stammering from the idiot on the other end was epic..the State Ag;s office was not amused. |

Again... if charities make 'their own' calls then they have to hire employees to do it. When you donate money, a portion is going to go to the handlers, be they professional fudraisers or the charity's own employees. It's not like the overhead would magically disappear if charities did all their fundraising in-house. Some of you guys must think that not-for-profits sit around looking for the most ineffecient way to screw their donors. |

My (and i do mean MY PBA, as in im a member and an officer of the local) PBA uses a one-time mailer, once a year for our Ball. Costs us $2500.00, Dontations come back directly to us..NO Middlemen, and everything else is done, including return mailing (Thank you letter to Donors) by the ball committee....and we arent THAT bif a department. Anyone who uses a Professional "Fundraiser" is just lazy. |

ETA: My mom used to stuff envelopes for the local sportsman's club when I was a kid. It's a lot different when you're running continuous long-term campaigns, and phone calls are more labor intensive as well. |

I moved into a new house last fall, paid for all the extra shit to have a completely unlisted number, plugged in the phone and picked up the receiver to check for a dial tone. Damn if there wasn't already a phone call from one of the "police" organizations looking for money. Phone didn't even ring. I must have picked it up milliseconds before the first ring.
I don't answer that phone at all any more. Just there for the internet and so the kids can call 911 in an emergency. I think they just dial random numbers. |

I have caller ID so I usually don't have to deal with the "charities" but I did have a local call I answered. They claimed to be raising money for the FOP, they said stickers were on the way and how would I like to donate? I asked them about their overhead and the guy just hung up on me! |

my dad still pays/donates to the FOP
and he was a career criminal/smuggler/bootlegger his reasoning is that in his day, it was a professional and not personal relationship between his kind and the cops, and off the clock both could be found drinking together (not true nowadays, and in fact some of his biggest customers in his vice ventures were off duty lawmen) and so why not help them some as they do a crappy job for little pay |
| We're limited to 2 fundraisers per year by law. There are about 35,000 mailings that go out, and maybe 10% of those have responses. Committe is about 8 guys, 3500 checks over a period of about 2 months isnt all that much of a workload, but we get enough to end up in the black by a decent amount for the ball, and we routinely donate pretty heavily to some local charities, Make-a-Wish, and Special Olympics. |
