My girlfriend wants some for her internship in Columbia.  I'm not a big fan of the stuff myself, but she can't take a gun to the hospital so that is out of the question.  What is the difference between pepper spray and mace and what one of the thousands of options should i look for.  Some links would be great too.  Thanks.

ETA:  What %OC should i be looking for?

OC is fun stuff and will incapacitate you for a good bit. Trust me

Some people are immune to mace.  Nobody is immune to OC.  Just to be on the safe side, I got my daughter Sabre.  It got both!

OC is made from pepper, basically.  It's not all the weak stuff, either.  Some of it's REALLY strong... which is good.

When looking for it, you want the lowest amount of dilution possible.

What does OC stand for?

ETA: Oleoresin Capsicum :  the magic of google.

I've been hosed with just about everything and Fox is the worst, with Sabre coming in second.  Punch and Deftec....meh.

I used to have a partner who's nickname was "Dr. Pepper".  That dude sprayed EVERYONE.  It never failed....I'd be on the bottom of the pigpile, and all of a sudden I'd hear his voice going "SRAY SPRAY SPRAY!" and just as I suck in a big lungfull to shout "NOOOOOOO!", he hoses the whole area down.  Perp, cops, errant household pets, curious passersby, low flying aircraft.....

Good times, good times.

I would stick with the standard stream....the fogger is no fun if you aren't paying attention to wind direction and foam can be scooped off and chucked back at you.

MACE is generally a 1% CN soulution, far less potent than what I had to suffer through at the Benning School for Boys.  Mace is a lachrymatory agent, which is to say in layman's terms that it makes all the soft, squishy tissues in your head try to kill you.  Mace seems to have varying effects on different people and the effects can vary WIDELY if the sprayee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Oleoresim Capsicum (OC) is also a lachrymatory agent, has the same end result as MACE, but doesn't seem to be affected to the same degree by outside factors such as dunk or drugged individuals.

As a side note, I am certified by Fox, Deftec and Aerko (makers of Punch and Freeze series of sprays) and have been a LE Chemical Aerosol Agent Instructor for the last 15 years.

Ignore the %.  What you want to look at is Skoville Heat Units (SKUs).  I'd get a small canister, definitely a flip-top style.....2oz can is about all most women want in their purse.  If she will carry it attached to her keychain, even better.  Less likely she will accidentally discharge the unit rummaging around in her purse.

I have....I do a couple times a year as part of our annual recert. Nothing is 100% effective and there's no way to measure willpower in a subject you have never had contact with.  I actually had a canister of Fox crushed, while it was in my hand, causing it to discharge in my face, and breaking several metacarpals and a couple of fingers.  Still hooked the guy up and carted him off to jail though.

Well...I won't say I'm all that but it doesn't affect me.

Aerko Freeze+P is the best I've actually used.  As good as it is, it is not 100% effective with all people.

The aerosol "grenade" version called "Clear Out" affects everyone even me.  It is simply wicked but not something you'd use for personal defense.

Well....depending on what manufacturer you are looking at, methods of measuring SKUs vary.....Standard FOX 5.3million SKU is pretty nasty.  In my personal and professional experience, it's the most effective aerosol irritant.

If you really want to get subjective, you could buy a couple different brands and have the little lady hose you down with them.  Give her the one you hate the most.

Technically incorrect.  I have seen several individuals doused with various brands of OC with less than expected results.  Look at PalmetoShooter here in this thread.  FOX doesn't bother him to the same degree it does me.  Spraying me with a DefTec product or Punch/Freeze is like tossing a little black pepper my way.

It's kinda like saying everyone who gets shot with a .45 falls down dead right away.  No such thing in the real world.

I can't tell the difference between 500K SHUs and 2.5mil SHUs in initial effect. The "sunburn" feeling lasts longer with the 2.5mil, but it's "stopping capability" was no different.

So from the sounds of it both pepper spray and mace can have less than desired effects on some individuals.  Wouldn't it be wise to use a formula that has both (saber red), to decrease the likelihood of running into an immune individual?

Fox also carries a training item. Has a flip top just like the actual unit and gives the user an idea of how to employ it.

I gave my daughter a 2oz Fox fliptop and had her practice on an oak tree, upwind and down. Every few visits I have her zap the tree again for practice.

Regardless of what you choose, your wife should be realistic about what to expect if she does have to spray anyone.

If she does spray someone, she should make sure they can't get their hands on her (distance), and understand that the pain isn't bad enough to stop a determined attacker. It doesn't matter what product it is... perfectly sober people can easily withstand the pain. What's hard to withstand is the involuntary closing of the eyes. So most spray-ees will have significant difficulty seeing.

So the best bet is to use a product that can be sprayed from a distance, and use the short amount of time it buys you to exit stage left as fast as possible while he follow you very well.

Either that or run over him w/ your car

I personally prefer aerosols, because they can have a significant impact on the lungs, and the short-term ability to breath effectively, as well as being easier to put on target. However, then you have the very real possibility of blow-back affecting you. Something you should practice for.

I also think anyone that's thinking of carrying OC should try it on themselves in order to fully understand what to expect. But that's a hard sale w/ the ladies. Ask me how I know.
