| Will WD 40 harm a blued firearm fininsh? |
|
No.
Don't slather it on. Clean the gun with solvent occasionally to prevent build up of dried gunk. Ask Old_Painless, the world's No. 1 advocate of WD-40 as firearm protection. Add a poll. Edited to add: About three weeks ago I was messing with a kid's Cricket rifle. When I cocked the action, the cocking piece and firing pin moved about like they were in cold, cold molasses. Grandpa had been using WD-40 as a lube, and after sitting for a year the gun was non-functional. A quick dip in the solvent can cleared it out. |

O_P says WD40 is good to go. http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu46.htm |

WD-40 is designed for water displacement and to prevent corrosion. It does a very good job of the water displacement part.
As a lubricant and protectant, not very good. It's mostly solvent and not too much oil. It won't hurt your gun, but there are far better products out there for your guns. Break-Free CLP (now owned by Winchester or Remington) is very good for protection and not too expensive. |

Thanks guys, If O_P says it's OK thats good enough for me to.
That Remington 700 300 win mag I got yesterday has the beginning issuer of surface rust. I'm out of gun scrub, I want to get it cleaned up. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=1040955 |

A 50-50 mix is good for corrosion for the time being. (I use 1/3 of ATF, kerosene and mineral spirits, with a little bit of lanolin.....a version similar to Ed'd Red. It really does a good job of lubricating and corrosion protection IMHO. Cheap also!) |

OK the Remington 1100 with the smooth bore & rifle sites was saved and cleaned up nice with the WD40
White paper towels until no more brown, blue was still intact The Remington 700 is marked Stainless Steel on the barrel, the surface rust went to far, no pitting at all but I had to blast it in media cabinet. |
