How can I make my upstairs bathroom floor watertight?  This is my kids bathroom and they frequently splash water out of the tub causing water to come into my bathroom ceiling.  I've caulked around the toilet supply line, caulked around the toilet base but still have water coming through there.  As an added bonus, the genius architect put the HVAC register in the floor 6" from the tub and toilet.

Tell the kids to quit screwing around.

What type of flooring, what kind of tub?

ETA:  eh, you could do it building new but trying to retrofit a waterproof bathroom won't work.  Throw down towels before they start or put 2" of water in the tub .   The only other thing is are you sure it's from splashed water and not a plumbing leak?

Tile floor over OSB subfloor.  I put towels down (when I remember).  Their 4 and 5 so they'll splash around the tub and occasionally dump the water out on the floor when their taking the toys out of the tub.

It could be a drain leak at the tub.

There is a seal there that can leak if not properly installed.

Or even a toilet leak at the wax ring.

A tile floor really shouldn't be leaking.  You could try sealing the grout, maybe.  How is the caulk line around the base of yor tub?

The tile only goes up to the base of the tub, so if the caulk is damaged or not there, you have no water barrier to the subfloor.

You need to make sure it's not a drain leak, like was said above.  Sounds odd.

A concrete backer board sub floor will help a lot.  Make sure it extends under the tub.  The little gap between the tile and the tub needs to be sealed with silicone.  And use a bath mat.   Any possibility the water is getting in around the top of the tub?  I've seen that joint fail before and it can cause an awful lot of damage.

Oh, and tell the kids to knock it off with the splashing or they'll have to use the hose outside.
