Theres a guy locally that has one for $160 in excellent condition. How are these for concealed carry? Should I snatch this one up or pass on it?

Interested myself. Charter Arms .38spl go for around $370 here. Wondering if they're worth it.

Charter Arms have been through many different ownership periods. depending on when the gun was made, it might be really good or really suck. I can't tell you more as I'm not an expert on Charter guns.

I'm thinking its one of the earlier models, Its blued with wood grips.

my mom has one and my wife has one. They are both excellent weapons in my opinion. They both paid 300-400 for theirs. The .38's will spray non-jacketed lead back in your face though.

The first model from Charter Arms were decent guns for the money.  The CHARCO and Charter 2000 guns were hit or miss.  The current version is supposed to be decent.  If its a version with a barrel shroud proceed cautiously.  Those tended to work loose and start to slip forward.  On some versions it was just held on with a set screw.

Early Undercover and Off-Duty models are GTG, especially at that price IMHO.

Check for looseness and timing issues, of course, but even if it's a lemon the current CA company will still fix an old one cheap (usually $50 or less).
