I had an encounter with a black bear hiking on Friday. My second one so far. They always see you first and are gone before you even realize what happened.
If they decide to attack instead of run, there is nothing you can do about it no matter what's in your holster. |

I maintain I am confident that I can kill any living thing on the surface of the Earth with just my home defense gun. And I feel more comfortable with decent power, excellent hitting ability, intimate familiarity with the weapon and lots of immediate follow up shots than something with lots of power, crappier hitting ability (on my part), unfamiliarity with the weapon and only a few shots I'd get the chance to take. People killed these things with sticks and muskets... If you cannot kill it with an M4, it's because you can't aim, in which case a Barret .50 wouldn't have helped you. I might possibly see upgrading to a FAL... But frankly, my faith in my M4 outweighs any advantage in stopping power... I'm going to fucking hit with my rifle, because I train with it obsessively. And hits are all that count. |

And hits are all that count. there is a huge difference between being able to kill it (which I could do with my Hoyt Katera and a 600 gr arrow) and stopping a fight with one. You could empty your mag into one, and it can be (for all intents and purposes) dead, and still kill you having seen these things up close, in the bush, you WILL want more than your M4...I am not saying the bear wont die as well, just that you wont be around to pose with it |
