Dude at work just ate a full serving of fried popcorn shrimp that had been in the refrigerator for 8 days. Microwaved it and gobbled it down. Is this some sick shit or what? He won't listen to us.

* Stored at 37 degrees in a standard styrofoam clamshell take-home box

I'm thinking about 2 days MAX on leftover seafood / shellfish?

Yeah it's gross, but then again, I've been really really hungry before.

But just thinking about rotten shrimp sickness puts me off it pretty quickly.

8 days? Seriously?

While I would be wary about other seafood, 'popcorn' shrimp have already been cooked in the deep fryer and are not going to have the regular seafood "issues".

I usually eat it by lunch the next day.  After that it goes in the trash.

In the refrigerator at work?  You should have thrown it out after it was there over a weekend.

Did it have a name and date on it?  If not, fair game to be tossed by anyone (meaning you).

I'm not sure that shrimp should ever by microwaved.

+1. soggy, rubbery...  I say cut your losses on any shrimp leftovers past 1 day old.

About 36 hours is my limit for shrimp.  8 days is just asking for a colonic cleansing.

I wouldn't eat it.

BUT...

If the prize for eating it was an AR-15 or AR-10 with whatever accessories you choose, would you eat it? Hell yeah I would!

Probably should have quotes around the word shrimp when you're talking about popcorn "shrimp". Is that really seafood? Do normal rules apply to heavily breaded & deep fried shrimp like food product?
There's probably more breading than there is shrimp and it's pretty well sealed in there. It's fine. Dry, rubbery, and unpalatable. But popcorn shrimp is like that fresh so 8 days isn't going to make a difference.

5 days is my limit on most fridge-foods. If it's still in there when I come back to work on Monday, it goes in the trash.

ETA - I've yet to get sick from leftovers. They just taste like hell after a week in the fridge. I got sick from a fairly expensive seafood restaurant, but it wasn't leftover related

What's the problem?

It was originally cooked, right?

It was refrigerated, right?

No big deal.  Unless it has stuff growing on it, or has a distinct bad odor, it's fine.

Food poisoning is food that is not cooked properly.

Popcorn shrimp is cooked, then heated up again in a microwave.

If you heat anything up its probably safe to eat.

Unless its been in your fridge for months and has mold and shit on it, that might not taste very good.

Good point I'm going to throw out the finely marbled rib eye's in the fridge and go eat dog shit instead so i can be an operator.

Good quality fresh food is one of the finer things in life. You never know when you're going to be stuck eating tuna, MRE and Iraqi goat meat. I will never take quality food for granted and if you where smart you wouldn't either. If the shtf you will be dreaming of fresh shrimp not 8 day old crap. Get it while the gettin is good.

I don't think anyone is saying they PREFER week-old food to fresh food - just that it is neither "disgusting" nor particularly dangerous to eat what was described.

Obviously fresher/newer is better than older, but that doesn't mean that old cannot be eaten.

Exactly, and I find it funny that most of us macho Arfcommers wouldn't touch food that is edible just because its old.
