Ok, so i am looking to buy a truck here within the next month or two. I want to stay under $4000, and am not looking for anything new. I am kinda torn between a slightly older Chevy Silverado 1500 and a slightly old Ford Ranger.

Now my first question is: How good is the Chevy on gas and how good is the Ford on gas? I know neither one is going to be amazing on gas or anything like that, but compared to the Dodge Durango w/ a Hemi that im driving now, just about anything will be better.

As for my other question: Would a 5 speed in either truck make the gas mileage any better or no?

Ranger is the smaller truck and should get the better mileage.  However, if you keep your foot out of it, and depending on the engine in the Ranger, the Chevy might be very close.

Do you need a 1/2 ton or a 1/4 ton? Thats the bigger question

What year of trucks?

I can only speak for the Chevrolets.  I had a 91' K1500 with a 350 auto, and got about 15 MPG.  A 5 speed will get you just a few more MPG.

I'm not an expert on either truck, so idk for sure what size ill need.

im going to be helping my uncle out quite a bit with hauling cut up trees and what not, and then commuting back and forth to work, which is roughly 30 miles each way.

does anybody have a rough estimate on what the mileage is for both vehicles?

I think one of these things is just like the other.

Yes, if you drive it correctly the manual will do better.

A 4-cylinder Ranger with 5-speed will hands down get better gas mileage than a V-8 Silverado, however, one can pull a bigger boat than the other. haul more wood than the other.

Full size trucks and good mileage are polar opposites.  The best and worst (with similarly sized drivetrains) will probably be 2-3 mpg of eachother.  Not enough to be a factor in your choice.  That type of gain matters to manufacturers trying to meet CAFE standards, not to you...

Going to the ranger can give you a significant gain in MPG, but it's a different class of vehicle alltogether.

88-95 C1500 about 14-16MPG
88-95 K1500 12-15MPG (4WD Kills Mileage)
96-99 C1500 16-19MPG
96-99 K1500 14-17MPG

Ranger 4 Cyl 18-22
Ranger 6 Cyl 17-20

I've actually owned all of the above and currently have a 95 K1500 getting 18.5 on avg. with some ECM tuning and a little bolt on BS (350cid, 4L60E, Z71, 33" tires, and 3.73 gears with a lock-rite)

For comparing MPG on vehicles you can look here: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

Your mileage may vary.

You can get a full size Ford Ranger... you'll just have to go back a few years to get it... like 1960 something...

I've got a '99 Ranger 2.3L four with a five speed.

I get 20-21 mpg but I do have a heavy foot.

That engine/tranny combo does have a reputation for reliability. Mine has 139K and the only thing I've replaced, other than normal wear items, is the thermostat.

for those with either truck: how is your truck for commuting? mileage, how it handles, etc.

at this point im kinda leaning towards the ranger.

my commute will be roughly 30 miles each way, if that helps at all.

thank you for all the answers so far,
