Im thinking about getting a dog. One thing i worry about is getting a dog that is going to have lots of health problems. What kind of papers/ paperwork should i look for from a breeder / seller to help cut down on having major health problems down the road?

Don't skimp on price.  The more expensive breeders cost that much because they have done everything they can to prevent those problems from appearing in their dogs.

Also, ask the breeder if you can look around the breeder's facility and meet some of their current dogs.  If they flat out refuse it's usually a sign that there's something they don't want you to see.

history of heath in teh breed line.  Larger breeds are prone to hip dysplasia and bloat

If you are really worried about health problems, then get some kind of mutt. All or most pure breeds have some kind of inherited health problem. My golden retriever is a fantastic dog but he has epilepsy and allergies which are inherited in a lot of goldens. The only thing my mutt has inherited is being damn ugly and sometimes retarded.

labs can have hip and knee problems. While a good breeder can lessen these risks, it does not remove it. Best way to find a good breeder is either through vets or looking for breed clubs/kennels in your area.

Also consider looking at a shelter. You could find a great dog there just waiting for his or her second chance. While there are no health guarantees, you can still find great dogs.

Get a mutt and you won't have any problems.
