[ARCHIVED THREAD] - I HATE Moving (Page 1 of 2)

I couldn't have picked a worse time to move. I'm extremely busy at work, and taking time off to move close enough to work that I no longer need to stay in a hotel during the week, was hard for me to do.

I took Thursday and Friday off, so that I could be in my new house by 9:00am on Saturday (why so early? That's when the AT&T U-Verse tech was scheduled to me there...priorities.
)

My entire life is sitting in a U-Haul in my driveway. My calves hurt so bad, that I'm no longer able to walk normally. I haven't slept in 36  hours, and I'm beginning to see things that aren't there.

On a positive note, my new internet connection kicks ASS! I haven't had anything better than EVDO for broadband at home, for 5 years. The downside? I no longer have my country digs. No shooting off my back porch, anymore.

Though I'm a bit saddened by the farewell I had to pay to taking a leak outside (without looking over my shoulder first), I'm pleased that I'm right around the corner from Top Gun Supply. Guess where I'm going on Monday to spend some money.

My mattress is buried in the truck. I am completely out of energy, so that's where it's going to stay until tomorrow morning. I'm so tired right now, that I could sleep on a concrete floor. It doesn't matter.

I don't care if you're going 200 feet or 2000 miles, moving is a pain in the ass.  I've moved 23 times in my 44 years of life, and while I enjoy living in a new place, I absolutely hate getting there.  My sympathies, and hope you settle in quickly!

You moved out of the country? DAMN! I thought you'd be that last guy to leave that place. I remember seeing your place on your webcam. Lots of breathing room out there. Didn't take you as much of a city/suburb kind of guy. Guess whatever made you move was pretty important.

Good luck.

The important question is, when can we expect to start hearing tunes again?

I feel your pain though, I'm moving next week.

When I moved last time out of Columbus...

"Hello, this is Two Men and A Truck"

They stuck all my shit in storage and I just packed the fragile stuff.
I will never move my shit again.

FYI,they have a service that can provide labor if that is all
that is needed. My parents used that last move down here.

Have fun the new digs. I grew up not far from your old place...

Chris

Money, and lots of it?

Actually, it's a new job. There is nothing, I repeat nothing for me in NW Ohio. I tried for 4 months while unemployed to find something that paid even half as well as my old job. The moment I said "Fuck it, let's look around Cleveland or Columbus"...bam. Got an interview, got a job.

Ever since August, I have been living in a hotel during the week. My new job is 2.5 hours away. The new house puts me 20 minutes from work, in a quiet little town of around 2,000 people.

Fear not, though. I will be returning to the country again. There's already a plan in the works.

No, I live in Chesterland now. It's your classic midwest small town in a rural county. Definitely not "suburbia" as it were, but I'm not out in the sticks anymore either.

I miss living in the country, but it's the way it has to be for the next 2-3 years.

I've had two corporate moves. This last one was on me.

Right now, there is pretty much no way that three dudes could pack and move my shit on a Saturday. I have...a LOT of stuff, and a lot of it is obscenely heavy.

But I swear to God, the next time I move, it's going to be a full service move. I don't care what it costs. I want to point to my (not packed) house, and say "Here it is. It needs to go over here to this new house. Let me know when it's done, and unpacked. Thanks".

Rent. I'm hanging here for 2-3 years. Then buying.

There's no way in hell I'm buying a place in a brand new area that I'm not familiar with. I need to live here for a bit, to get a feel for exactly where I want to be.

That doesn't take 2-3 years, though. Saving for a house on at least 20 acres does.

I'm living cheap in the meantime. This is a nice 4bd place, and honestly...it's nicer than my old house. The rent is low. I couldn't buy it this cheap, unless I put something like 30% down on it.

Cool.  I might have looked at the house you got if it has been available for a while.  We are in the midst of deciding whether to buy or not right now, and I've lived here my whole life.  At this point I am about to go mad with the whole thing as my current living situation can only be described as hellish.

I guess I'm kinda lucky in that department.

I've been gradually moving my stuff back home to Iowa for the past couple years (I just take some stuff down every time I go for a visit). Sure it's driving my Mom nuts because I keep putting more & more of my crap in her spare room & have 2 vehicles, a tractor & a bunch more of my stuff in her sheds.... but I "loaned" her $3500 a few years ago & I figure this will make us even.

Hopefully, I'll be finished this summer.....

Hey Sub, quick question on the U-verse:

When they installed it, did they do the tackiest, most fucked up job ever?  Mine featured white wires STAPLED to my newly installed flooring. (Dark in color)

A friend had a hole drilled 2 INCHES from his baseboard into his hardwood floor to access the basement.  The hole was 1".

Just curious to see if times have changed, or if the cable guy still deserves his bad rap.

Easiest install ever. The previous occupant had U-Verse already, so all he had to do was just configure the RG and the DVR.

Whoever lived here before must have been a long lost brother. There's CAT5 in every room. It's very well done, too. Nice and clean.

I feel your pain, Subby.  I close at the end of May.  I lived for four years in a roach infested, shit-hole of an apartment with drug dealers for neighbors because I hate moving that bad.

On the up-side, we don't have a lot of shit left after hurricane Ike.

I feel your pain man, i actually just moved myself. I'm very sore and tired today. I took Thursday and Friday off to move. But i got called into work Thursday which sucked. So Friday i had to do everything, pack up and move, what a long day that was. And now I'm back to work tonight finally getting a little rest sitting here surfing the net. Still gotta unpack all my stuff at my new place and get settled in. But yeah moving always sucks. I don't want to move for at least a few years now, haha.

Right there with ya' brother...

We just moved from FL to TX and from a house to a 3BR apartment. It took a 26" Uhaul and two 6'X12' Uhaul trailers to get us from "A" to "B" and that was after the "purge". I used to move all the time but never from a long-term established home (workshop, storage unit, theater, the works). I'm not as young as I used to be and let me tell you - I was hurting like I hadn't in a while...

The good news is we went from Comcast to Verizon FIOS and so far I couldn't be happier - I love me some bandwidth!

Good Luck!

Sounds about like me. Get this - 27' U-Haul, PACKED to the gills, and I didn't bring any appliances or furniture except for two kids beds, my bed, and a kitchen table.

Speaking of the "great purge" I rented a 12 yard roll off dumpster to get rid of shit I've been carrying around with me for years.

And then I rented a second one.

And I gotta be honest, I'm still going through boxes and saying "You know, I really don't need this stuff anymore". Things are going to CHANGE, around here. My family is tired of me saying it, too.

Moved twice in the last 5 years and and am starting to pack for another move, hopefully my last for a long time.

The house is bad enough but the biggest pain is the shop stuff. Stuff like lathes, welders, and milling machines that weigh well literally tons. Animal mounts or another hassle because you can't really pack them, just screw them to a vertical board in a cargo trailer and you don't get much else in there then.

On the bright side the new place has lower ceilings and I should save

My wife and I have a year left in NY state before we can bail and complete our dissertations back home. Dreading the thought of moving again as we have more crapola now along with more books and boxes and boxes of journal articles from the last three years of course work.

The plus side is we have a place back home in cheese land that is bigger than the 2 bedroom we have now in shitstain usa. Did I mention I hate where we live now?

Haven't really been in the local shops, but it looks promising. My folks came over to help me unload the truck, and to repay them for making my day so much easier, I stopped off at the Giant Eagle just down the road to get some steaks for the grill.

The place was crawling with hot MILFS. At a Giant Eagle.

I'm feeling better about this move.

Hey Sub, since we got to watch you bbq in your backyard and chow some steaks at the old place, you planning on having a subnet bbq with possible live band at the new place?  It would be cool and a good way to break in the new diggs.

And yes, I'm almost ashamed to say I had this conversation with my girlfriend once upon a time:

Girl: What are you watching?

Me: Subnet.

G: Whats a Subnet?

Me:HE is a Subnet, (pointing at the screen) he just finished cooking burgers for the wife, kids and mother-in-law.  They just went inside.

G: Ooookay, and what's he doing now?

Me: Cooking himself a steak.

Girlfriend leaves room, comes back five minutes later.

G: You still watching Sub-his-name?

Me: Yeah, he's eating his steak now.

G: This is really fuckin weird.

Me: Can you get me a beer?

Girl walks out shaking her head.

And yes, I will be doing a BBQ broadcast sometime in the near future. I have a nice deck, now.
