[ARCHIVED THREAD] - My MacBook Pro battery exploded (Page 1 of 2)
|
Pretty sure they will replace the battery free. My battery stuck in the machine and started to separate when I tried to put a fingernail under the edge. Take it into the Apple Store if there's one around. My MacBook Pro video went out at the same time and it's over 2 years old. They have a replacement policy as they've failed in enough machines to get Nvidia to help deal with it. No charge for either the video card/board or battery.

I have had 5 or 6 of my macbooks do this at work in the past two years. no warranty apple will tell you to FO. ETA: take the battery out and don't use it ever again! LiPo fires are not fun....

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: I think they had a recall on some batteries awhile back, search online for it. This is not a new problem. Mac batteries were causing fires, etc. Just be glad your house didn't burn down. Dells and other laptop mfg's have had similar problems with batteries. |

Same thing happened to my Macbook Pro. Do you let it regularly cycle? Charge, then let the battery drain during unplugged use? I had mine plugged in all the time b/c I was running it w/ an external monitor...battery didn't like that apparently. Naah, bad sony cell. Your battery might not see it's maximum lifespan in those conditions, but it's not going to blow anything up in and of itself. I've got a few laptops in similar usage and have had no problems of that sort in years. Sometimes I see swelling in battery packs that have been run into the ground and then just left in for years afterward on a charger, but we're talking some serious neglect before it gets to that point. For the record, any lithium battery has the ability to go boom. Your cellphone battery, your laptop battery, your CR123 flashlight batteries, whatever. |

Good to know...I just figured it got too hot from constantly being on the charger. The battery get so hot that it could burn skin. No Mac hate though, I'm on a unibody Macbook, still love mac products. |

It is the batteries, which were made by Sony I believe, not Apple's fault. OP, you have to pay attention to recalls. They recalled those batteries a while back. If you cannot get a new one under warranty just buy a new battery. If your laptop is DOA and no Apple Care, well, too bad. They will likely tell you to FO. |

Yea, for certain problems they extend the warranty, like the batteries and video cards in this case, or hard drives in the case of first gen macbooks. Fuckers only came out with their extension on hard drives after most of ours had already failed on warranty, and after we had replaced at least 3-4 more out of pocket. We must've bought 60 machines in that batch, and I think almost every one of that batch has lost it's hard drive early. Had one I replaced today in fact. I wondered how it made it this long until the user told me she rarely uses the machine. Tell ya what though, after years of dealing with Dell, Apple's phone support is a dream. I call in to a clearly understandable english speaker, report my issue and troubleshooting steps, then they send a box for the dead shit. It shows up next day on the morning fedex truck and I send it back out on the afternoon truck. It's usually back on my desk in 4 days. Fuck, I had one go back December 23, and it was waiting for me by noon on the 26th. Pro tip- when you're giving your serial number or spelling things to the Apple phone guys, they know and prefer the standard phonetic alphabet. My officemates sometimes titter a bit when I'm all, "Whiskey-foxtrot-seven-lima-four-niner-alpha", but they always get it first try and have thanked me for doing so on occasion.

If they've still got 'em in their supply chain and you're nice to the tech, they might make it happen. They definitely cut off the recall some time ago, but I've had 'em throw me a bone like that before. If you call the main applecare support number and get nowhere on that, try calling 800-800-2775, then option "3". That's their education support line, but they can handle personal stuff too. I think their education support techs default out to extra cool |

I have gotten plenty of free/discounted shit from the big OEMs by being cool about things. Those support people get HAMMERED by rtards that think it is Dells job to support some POS software they installed that fucked the computer up. Being nice and cool about it can get you quite a few things. |
