Is it it safe to store alcohol long term (10+ years) if its in the plastic bottles?  I been paying more for glass due to worrying about he leeching from the plastic.  Thanks!

I think so. I've been aging some whiskey in oak chips in a 2 liter bottle for a year now.

I prefer glass for storage, but there is no science behind my decision, just warm, fuzzy feelings.

What alcohol comes in plastic that you would want to age for any length of time?

Shouldn't be that much of an issue, the plastic they use is very inert.

I will say one thing, if storing alcohol for a long time the biggest concern is light and temperature fluctuation.

If you can keep it in a dark place where hte temperature doesnt shift quickly then it will keep for a good long while plastic or no.

That and the lower oxygen permeation rate of glass compared to plastic.

Maybe he just wants to store it in case of SHTF.

I would stick with glass.

While the alcohol  may or may not leech some pthalates out of the plastic, the big concern is breakdown. And almost all plastics breakdown over time, the plasticizers come out and they become brittle. Unless you were getting some special plastic guaranteed to last 10+ years, I would stick to glass.

Plastic will break down.  Since liquor is a consumable product, I doubt the plastic has any additives to extend it's shelf life.  I'd go with glass for long-term storage.

I kind of wonder if the OP is not talking about Isopropol for medical uses.....

Yup this is for a SHTF type of situation which seems will never happen as .gov just keeps printing and seems to be able to continue doing so.

Thanks for all the responses.
