Ok, in the scene where the Russian special forces guys in white came looking for the Wolverines after Daryl had been captured, bugged and released they were carrying AK-74s. These were the side folding A triangle stock, distinctive 5.45 bakelite magazines and 74 style brake.

The movie was released in 1984 and most of the AKs were the Egyptian Maadis which were imported by Steyr Arms. Some were semi only as imported and some were registered and legally converted to full auto by Stembridge gun rentals. To the best of my research the first "74" ever imported was the Norinco 88S which wasn't imported until the end of 1988 at the earliest and most say 1989. Additionally 5.45x39 ammo was extremely rare in 1989 and I don't think any was available in 1984.

So where did the 74s come from?

Most likely they were look-alikes that were made to fit fake prop mags.

I read about the AK-74 mock ups used in the movie, and then I look at my Russian made SGL-31 complete with cheap surplus mags and ammo and realize we really do live in marvelous times.

I dunno about the weapons themselves but I DO know the mags were
regular 7.62 AK mags painted orange red.
