I did some demo work on a church that burned down about 7-8yrs ago....I have a chunk of the large walnut cross that wasn't totally burned.
the whole top end was burled.....really gorgeous wood....I saved it....I also saved a couple pcs of brass from the front of the pulpit would it be wrong to make a set of grips out of it?....and use the brass as inlay? the wood is at least a hundred years old. I don't really have a problem with it....but I shoot with a few very religious and spiritual folks. I don't know what I'd do with the inlay....but a cross has been suggested....also "WOG".....I dunno. What does the hive mind think. PS...thanks to vermont2nd for reminding me I had the stuff....he made some from spalted maple burl....they're awesome. |

I am religious, and would have no issue with it. The cross was a mere symbol for the members of the church - it wasn't the real thing. To them it perished in the fire. It's not like you are reusing it for an evil deed. Another thought: Have you thought of offering the wood piece to the new church (assuming they rebuilt)? They might appreciate it as a surviving token of their original church. My $.02 |

I don't see a problem with it, they were having it demoed, so the bible thumping owners didn't seem to mind that the material was to be destroyed or reused. OP said the church burned down and he was part of the demo crew. The Bible thumping owners probably did mind. |

My $.02 We pulled the large bronze cross and left it in the condition found...scarred..bent...scorched....they have it on display somewhere in the church. |

I'd do it. And then I'd name it my God Gun. I don't think the Good Lord would honestly care too much. With that gun you could smite the enemies of the lord and yourself, you could punish them for their misdeeds and naughty behaviour! With this revolver, so full of mercy, I shall now bestow the glory of god upon their heinies in the form of a 357 magnum blast anointed as if of the crucifix itself. |

You salvaged it with permission of the church, do with it what you will. It would be a great conversation piece. A piece of burled walnut would make an awesome stock. You would probably have a couple of scraps left over to do several 1911 hand grips.
When you done please post some pics. This sounds like an awesome project. |

as long as you have the right to the stuff you took, do with it what you please.
I'd not be offended if some salvaged lumber from a burnt church was made into a roof for the out-house. Now, if you said 'hey mind if I take this burned wood for a project?' and the priest said 'okay' you are good. If, however, you absconded with a bit of fine grain old wood without permission, that is theft, it doesn't matter if you make it into a new cross or a gun grip or a toothpick |

They had already been through and salvaged what they wanted....we did find the bronze cross and gave it to them....all the disgarded rubble was being loaded onto a members dumptruck...to be taken to his farm to be buried...so they didn't have to pay for disposal. The wood I didn't ask about.....it came off the truck....the brass came from a pile if junk we pulled to the side....it had hinges...latches....doorknobs....etc....we asked the chairman if they wanted to keep any of it.....he said "no". I figured fair game....a couple of the doorknobs were turned into cane tops...and one of the old latches has new springs and holds the pantry door closed in my friends house. I don't feel anything was stolen....I feel like it was salvaged... |
