I am not big into electronic gadgets and currently have a basic phone, but I am thinking of getting an iphone mainly for the gps app and being able to play music and get a call at the same time (lawn care business).   I notice they are talking about a new iphone coming out.  Will it be available to the public soon?  I am thinking that the current iphones will come down in price when the new comes out.  And is there enough difference b/t the 3G and 3Gs to pay the $100 more for the 3Gs?  What to do?

Apple is supposed to debut something new tomorrow.  I'd wait until at least then.  I have a 3g and it works just fine for me.

Wait till June when the new iPhone comes out. The 3g and the 3gs are not that much different to justify the cost.

I've had a 3g for a year and it's been a good phone, but the service stinks. AT&T probably has the worst network of the big 3.

It will be out in June, at the earliest.

Get the 3GS if you need a faster processor and the ability to capture video from the device instead of just photos.  If you're still on the fence about it, consider that most people don't need a 3GS - they want one.

I had an iPhone for a while, but then I lost it  Trust me, get a DAMN GOOD holster for the thing.  Those Otter cases are great, but the holster for them is worthless.  I might still have my iPhone if not for the shitty holster design...

Which brings me to another point for you to consider –– most phones come with insurance plans to help cover replacement costs in the event of loss or theft.  This is not the case with the iPhone.  They'll still offer you a warranty, but that's in case the OS on the thing goes tango uniform.  Lose it?  Stolen?  Damaged?  Broken?  Not covered.  The promotional offer for one with a new contract is great, but it's something like $500+ to buy a new one if you lose it.

So, again, get a damn good holster to go with it, or keep the thing in a pocket that closes (like cargo pockets).

Just my $0.02 from experience.

yes it can.

That being said there is a confirmed update to OS4 for the iphone scheduled for later this year. The next iphone is as of right now rumors with no evidence. This is comparable to rumors that the iphone is coming to verizon that surfaced some time in 2008 and have yet to come to be.

The op is moving to his first smart phone. The iphone is a good choice or some one not totally tech savy and/or time to invest in learning the intricacies of some thing with more options.

I believe they are going to show of a preview of OS 4.0 for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.  They are also due to upgrade the Macbook and Macbook Pro's.

Here is a little tidbit about Verizon and the iPhone.  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100406/ap_on_hi_te/us_tec_apple_verizon_iphone

I have an iPhone 3Gs and love it. I do all sorts of crap with it I never thought possible when I first got it. I thought it would be cool to capture video, surf the web, and a few other cool little things. But now there is so much you can do. I can't imagine being without it. Get a good case for it and you are GTG.

Looked a Droid. They are damn nice phones, just really like my iPhone.

My holsters  (belt clip) sucked as well. I wrote an email asking if they had plans to make a better one or any tips to make the ones I had better.
I got a reply saying they had made it better and asked for my address since they were going to send me a replacement for free. I asked if the ones on the website were the new model, because I wanted to replace all three of mine.  The next reply was three new ones were on the way free of charge.

My phone has not fallen out since. Even while shooting matches.
