What are good ways to get a job? Even restraunts want someone else*.

I've tried Craigslist, YahooJobs**, etc. No call backs or interviews. Should I try & dress up my info?***

I mean I shower, wear a suit, shave, have no piercings, cleaner criminal record than Jesus, etc.

I think I have a chance with a manager who said to check back next week, so I'm really hoping on that.

*They want female waitresses. Well I can't blame them there.
**Most were scams. Fortunately I didn't pay them anything.
***"Oh yes, I graduated from MIT & worked on the space station. How soon can I start selling cars?"

Hmm...are you using asterisks on your applications?

No, but I've given thought to putting in smileys.

Lol, I like you; you've got a sense of humor...

...when can you start?

Really though, idk man..it's tough out there, worse in some areas.

Networking seems to be the best bet; most jobs aren't even advertised.

Good luck!

I have 2 degrees and Fortune 500  divisional management experience. A few years back I was getting interviews and actual job offers sight unseen. I can't get a fucking return call now.

I run into the same shit everywhere - they want every worthless certificate in the universe plus 15+ years of experience doing EXACTLY the job they are hiring for on EXACTLY the system they use in EXACTLY the industry they are in doing EXACTLY the same type of reporting they chose to do in EXACTLY the same size company dealing with EXACTLY the same customers in EXACTLY the way they do it and supervising EXACTLY the same amount of people that are doing EXACTLY the same jobs the employees there do and want to pay you a staggering $45k a year. Good like finding the one person out there you are looking for (Clue: hes the guy that just left after working there for 15 years).

I get a good laugh out of trying to listen to some HR drone explain to me as to why XXX certificate would be beneficial to this position or if I want a REALLY good laugh, I ask them what it stands for. 90% have no idea, they just know that you need it (which you don't).

Ironically, I see the SAME ads up every week and the job boards (monster, indeed, yahoo jobs, etc) just become more and more recycled jobs that keep recirculating.

Yeah, out in Texas it's great but here.... well there's at least 8 vacant office buildings on the street where my bank is.

I guess I'll start offering to say I'm a black Vietnam veteran in case they needed to hire a minority for tax reasons. I mean I've played Bill in "Left 4 Dead" so I've got that part down.

The first step is to take an honest inventory of your skill set.  Doing so will help you focus on the jobs where you will meet the needs of the future employer.

I sympathise with the observation that employers are looking for extremely focused prospects, but that it a sign of the time.

If you are applying at restaurants lose the suit.  Dress business casual, smile, be friendly and make them like you.  Most importantly RELAX.

Why lose the suit?

The restraunts I dine at/apply to have their staff dress similar to mine except I wear a tie.

As for relaxing, I play a calm guy pretty well.
That said, I have only enough savings from my last job to live for two more months & after that I've either got to be hired or dead. Well I could sell my guns but that's just crazy talk.

As a former resturant guy, most of them only wear that because they have to wear it to work.

Go looking like this to your next interview.

Facial tattoos really impress prospective employers, especially if the job involves representing the company to the public.  This is the kind of man that Fortune 500 companies are looking for these days.

Just kidding.   Good luck.

I think it makes you look like you're trying too hard.  If you were applying for a job with a law firm or something similar the suit would be appropriate, but not for this type of job.

If I didn't do that for a woman, doing that for a job just ain't gonna happen.

OK, I am going to let you in on a secret.

Businesses only hire people for one reason: To make the business money.

Think about this for a few minutes.

When you are applying for a job, the person reading your resume, cover letter, etc.... or the person interviewing you is asking the question: How will you make the company more money than everyone else who is applying for this job?

Answer that question with how you present yourself (on paper and in person).

BTW, this rule has a closely related corollary: If you are an employee and are uncertain about the correct course of action to take, ask yourself: what would I do if I owned the business? That is the right answer.

It is a tough market our there right now (unless you are an employer like me). Good luck and don't get discouraged.

First, stop wasting your time with Craigslist, YahooJobs, AOL Job
Finder, MySpace Wanna J-O-B, etc... unless you want to sell stuff after
cleaning out the garage.  Have you posted on BIG sites that could use
your skill-set like FedJobs, USAJobs, FedWorld, Monster, your local .gov
employment pages?  I got on with .mil, thirteen months after first
finding a job as a contractor through these sites.  There are jobs out
there.
Second, have you Googled what you would like to be.  What you want to
be, may not be a Search Keyword that
the scanners are looking for... then you will have to expand your
search vocabulary.  Should have some basic buzzwords built-up from your
time at NASA and MIT. Google NASA buzz-words...
And last, there is networking.  Guy working at the gun store this
morning mentioned he worked full-time at UPS too.  I mentioned my
freshly EMT graduated son was looking and had tried the online UPS apps,
along with dozens of others, but there was nothing online.  The guy
said to GO to the local hub office and ask for an application and turn
in a resume, because they are ALWAYS hiring.  And, to mention his name.
Also, are you willing and able to relocate?  The Space Shuttle Cafe is closing, and there are and will be many HIGHLY
qualified and networked folks looking for employment.  Best of luck to
you.  Press on.

You are a fairly smart cookie.

I apply to a lot of sales jobs & have over 5 years experience in such work. Yet still, no call backs.

EarlBypass, I did try Monster, the NCESC & several other legitimate sites with no results.

Second, have you Googled what you would like to be?

Not really sure what this means. If I apply to a job, I do have a fair knowledge of what needs doing there, if thats what you mean.

I'm not really married to any idea though. I mean welder, plumber, sales, it's all good to me.

Also, are you willing and able to relocate? The Space Shuttle Cafe is closing, and there are and will be many HIGHLY qualified and networked folks looking for employment. Best of luck to you. Press on.

You know, I'm not really in the NASA business, right? I'm the ex-Walmart people greeter.

As far as relocating, there are no jobs available I think for my skill set that are self sustaining.
Basicly, I live here with free rent or I sleep in my car in Texas & shower never.

I tried UPS's website but there was nothing in my area. I'm planning on headingto the local hub Monday, though I'm reasonably confident that they will tell me to do the application online*.
