Exploding ammo hinders fire crews in Wayne
Twp.

March 31, 2010

Ammunition stored in a garage complicated work for firefighters Tuesday
as they battled an extra alarm blaze at a home in incorporated DuPage
County.

Also aggravating the situation, fire officials said, was that there

were no hydrants located near the burning Wayne Township home in the
29W100 block of Hill Court. To fight the flames, fire officials
from several departments had to work together to bring water to the
scene.

Bartlett firefighters responded to the call of a house fire about
7:40 a.m. at the home, which is located in a subdivision off Route 59
between Bartlett and West Chicago.

The garage was engulfed in flames upon firefighters' arrival and
initial efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered because several
rounds of ammunition stored in the garage were periodically exploding,
according to reports.

The homeowner had stored ammunition for target practice and hunting
in his garage, Bartlett Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief
Bill Anderson said.

"When the first officer arrived there was some going off," Anderson
said.

To make matters worse, there were no hydrants nearby from which
firefighters could draw water.

To fight the fire, firefighters from Bartlett and several other area
departments set up two 1,500-gallon holding pools for water, Anderson
said.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control
and they remained on the scene for about three hours, Anderson said.

The fire, which began in the garage, extended to the residence, a
motor home and two vehicles parked next to the home. The garage and two
cars were destroyed in the blaze, officials said.

A total of 14 fire departments aided the Bartlett Fire District
during the ordeal on Tuesday.

No dollar estimate of the damage was available Tuesday although the
residence was uninhabitable, according to Anderson. The cause of the
fire was still under investigation, he said.

One person was transported to a local hospital for observation of
non-life threatening injuries as a result of the fire, Anderson said. He
did not release any further details about the condition of that person.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the
residents of the home. Two adults were living in the house, a Red Cross
spokeswoman said. She believed both victims had another place to stay.

Ammo DOES NOT explode.  It pops, and standard turn out  (bunker) gear will prevent injury.  I'd be more concerned about a can of soup than a bunch of rounds coming apart.  Now..... if he storing black powder, that's whole different story.

What bullshit.

Yeh, there will be popping as the ammo goes off.

And the shell casings might fly.

Bunch of ignorant BS.

your average jo (including average gun owner/shooter) doesn't know that.  hell, before i came on this website, i even thought a bullet would go flying at a high speed if a cartridge was set off outside a gun.

I'm (personally) more concerned about whats under your kitchen sink, and the other goods that you keep in your garage then ammo... Everything from small LP tanks to, powder, small cylinders of acetylene, fuel cans, pool shock, aerosol paint cans, etc..

Um, that pop is an explosion...  It's not a Mk82, but it's still an explosion..
