Do animals continue to breed if they cannot support their own basic survival?

For instance, if a deer is unable to find enough food to support itself will it attempt to breed that year?

I always thought that the answer was generally no.

It seems to me that for some reason the people that are breeding the most are also the ones that are unable to support themselves. I think a reason for that is all of the aid that we give them "for the children" and such. My though is that if we stopped subsidizing their failure, they would stop breeding much like that starving animal.

Really bad winters with next to no food here doesnt stop whitetails from reproducing.

The reason the people with no jobs and no money are breeding the most is because they have the most free time and no money to go do anything else.

Millions of stray dogs worldwide disagree with your hypothesis.

I suspect two things happen.  One, good times fertility probably increases.  Two, viability and survival decreases during lean times.

You've seen too many Disney movies. Animals eat, fuck and if predators kill as much as they can. There is somewhat of a balance because all they can is usually about the right amount. But animal populations will and have gotten out of balance with or without the influence of man.

Their situation is way more simplistic...

Lack of food due to over pop/low food supply= less animals healthy enough to breed... some animals die off due to starvation (see survival of fittest)
Lack of shelter or habitat= competition from strongest and best adapted (see survival of fittest)
Lack of food for new youngins= babies that just dont make it or are weak and get eating by predators (see again.. well you get it by now)

etc...
etc...

with animals it is just survival of the fittest and supply/availability versus population and interrelationships with other creatures be they prey predator or competition for common food sources...

with us... well we have a conscience. This has led way for "us" (some) to lose "our" (their) survival instinct... and our survive or die instincts

this has in turn led to welfare programs and "feel good" programs that allow people who are not capable of being the "fittest" to survive and reproduce.

This is because those of us that are the strongest have little recourse to ensure the natural way of things actually works anymore...

rinse and repeat until the weak arent allowed to further themselves with meaningless words/laws/programs

I think it's fucked up you need a permit to hunt, but not to procreate.

ETA:  Those with one kid "on the system", well shit happens.  Once they hit two kids "on the system" should equal the mother getting her tubes tied, cut, and removed!  You want to have kids and you can't support 'em, well fuck you screw you get bent we'll take care of ya'.

men can't have a vasectomy? It's far less invasive then cutting a woman open. Holy shit batman.

Men do not produce babies.

It's the "mother" on welfare that's the problem.

Besides, half of these women can't even nail down who the father is.

Giving the man (if you could find him) a vasectomy would be pretty futile.

When applied to humans this is called Social Darwinism. It is the only long-term solution with a historical or natural observational precedent that does not directly lead to communism, a resource war, or huge viral brooding ground that spreads disease.
