Retailer caught up in fake Intel processor scandal.

As PCWorld put it, “This story is just too wild to ignore.” Major computer retailer NewEgg this week got a bit of bad publicity when it turned out it shipped a number of customers fake Intel CPUs. Actually “fake” is the wrong word. PC World said the bogus chips were more like “movie props” than counterfeit processors.

(Source: HardOCP)The boxed “chips” were almost laughably fake, said Hard OCP: The “chips” had no pin connectors on their back sides, there were spelling mistakes on the text on the box, the instruction book inside the box had blank pages, and the cooling fan was just a lump of plastic!

NewEgg apologized and said it had traced the fakes to one of its suppliers, and immediately “terminated” its relationship with said supplier. Intel, for its part, said it was investigating the matter: "Intel has confirmed these are non-functional, counterfeit processors and Newegg is working with the affected customers on replacements.”
