So my SO and I had a talk about getting a dog.

thats where we started to disagree. I wanted something like a German Shepard or a Husky. Maybe even a Lab of some variety.
She wants a pitbull like when she was younger...

i said i would ask the hive...

Also, I told her if we did in fact get the PB I would not be afraid to put a .45 through it if it went full retard...justified statement?

You can't go wrong with a German Shepard.  The statement is not justified.  I don't think PB's are inherently bad dogs.  They are taught to be that way, but I am no expert on them.

Don't get a husky if you enjoy sanity

I can't recommend Karelian Bear Dogs enough!  Mine is amazing!  Well behaved, smart, moderate size, and legendary tenacity.  They require good training and someone strong enough to be alpha, or they will be!

German shepard- Like an astronaut- In good shape (usually), can do math, always serious, does not party. Ever.

Husky- Like the name says, kinda like the chubby best friend you had growing up. Will party. Lots of hair.

Lab- is a dog.

Pitbull- Not a lot of hair, loves to party and lift weights. Will beat people up for you. You and all your friends know that you MIGHT have to shoot the guy one day, but its his parents fault, not his.

Had a husky, lived 16 years. Great fun dog and very sweet. Miss him and think of him very often. We have our second Norwegian Elkhound now. They are great dogs too.  Smart, strong, goofy playful and all around good dog...but hairy monsters.

Here is my vote

My daughter keeps yelling about a PB. I did a little research. There are over 13,000 of them in Pa available thru rescue. The closest any other breed comes to that is 3K. There are VERY few GSD's.

Of those listed I would probably go for the pit. I don't really care for them, but they are probably a lot less work than the others mentioned. The guy who stated not to get a Husky if you value your sanity is dead on.

I have a neapolitan mastiff though, so I'm probably not the best guy to take breed advice from.

No way, Pitbulls are a handful. I didnt see mine sleep till he was 2. Then theres the whole "whos the boss" thing. There has to be a stronger alpha than with any of the other breeds listed. Pitbulls dont have that "athletic" look from chillin on a couch.

I'd get a lab.  Lots of fun.  Then again, I already have two, so I'm biased.  PB's are okay if you get them young enough and spend the time to socialize them.  A GSD is a great dog, too.

I suggest you don't get all focused on breed just yet.  Take a look at several candidate dogs of different breeds, I'm sure your local shelter has lots, and just pick the best dog for you.

Do not get a pit unless you are willing to invest the time in training it properly.

As a diehard bully fan, it is my opinion that the only thing wrong with any Pit is its master or more correctly, lack thereof.

That ends this PSA.

A good friend has been training seeing eye dogs for the last 10+ years, I mentioned the whole 'PBs aren't inherently bad, they are trained to be that way' and she disagreed. She has known several respected, professional dog/animal trainers that have had PBs for years without incident then one day they flip out and go violent and kill every other animal in the house for no apparent reason, they are never the same again. They talk about them like the neighbors of serial killers too; "Buster was a quiet dog, never aggressive at all, kinda kept to himself, except the day he killed the doby, the great dane, the goat, the ducks, the neighbors horse and the 17 koi out of the pond." Needless to say, we didn't get a PB. I'd say go to the shelter and look at all the dogs there, take an afternoon, play with many of the possible dogs, you never know what dog you will click with. You may end up with a chihuahua that doesn't know he only weighs three pounds, or you may end up with a St. Bernard that thinks she's a lap dog. Dogs make the world a much happier place, just find the one that clicks with your family.
