The CineMate® Series II speakers are on sale for $489.
Reviews seem good except no treble/bass adjustment. I have a passive equalizer that I am using with my ancient 5.1 surround system. Can I run the signal through the EQ before running it through the Bose? Nothing in the Bose faqs, nothing on line that I can find. |

Ugh, if your speakers are so bad you need equalization to help, the better solution is to buy better speakers. For about 25% of the price of those Bose speakers you can buy better quality ones.z Actually the speakers are great, it's the amp unit that sucks. It is one of those early 90's rack unit 5.1 Dolby Surround systems with a sub woofer that has it's own stand alone amp. I bought a passive EQ because the system didn't have enough bass/mid/treble adjustment. I bought a new Plasma and I am using the amp, EQ and the main speakers from that system. It sounds great when it's loud, when I want to watch the news it can't produce quality sound at normal news TV levels (if you know what I mean). My last TV was a Magnavox projector, it had two big speakers in the cabinet and it had surround sound. I have a Samsung 58 inch Plasma, the sound that comes out of it pales in comparison to the Magnavox. |

$489 ??? Buy an Onkyo Home Theater in a box for that money and be MUCH happier. The Navy exchange has 3 systems I was looking at, one was a Yamaha, one was an Onyko and the other was a Samsung. The problem is that I don't want surround sound / 5.1 whatever it's called. I am done stringing speaker wires all over the place and I am not going to tear up my house (been there, done that) to run wires. I don't want to pay for three speakers I am not going to use. |

Yeah, go with the Bose. No you can't use an EQ with it. Actually I'm not going to say that you can't, I'm going to say that I wouldn't. I wouldn't use analog at all, I'd use the Toslink cable. |

I bought my brother a panasonic surround system with wireless rear speakers, he's really happy with it. I think it was about $250 or so on sale from AAFES. |

To me it's loud and tinny. You also have to remember that I worked on jets for 20+ years in the Navy, so my hearing is not what it used to be. Me and the wife are tired of "furniture" sized sound systems and TV's. ![]() My friend, I hear ya, and I see what ya have going on there... but a large part of your dissatisfaction is coming from doing things "your way" instead of the "right way". There should be no fireplace there. Components do not belong on the floor. You have a laptop on a fucking speaker? ![]() Dude if you're "stuck" in that position, buy Bose, because theres one thing that IT IS, and that's tiny. I want to help you but due to circumstance especially, (fireplace) you may be unhelpable. Center channel needs to face forward close to ear level, for one thing. Not exactly possible with the Titanic there. |

The first thing I would do is get some nice wood... and I'd enclose/hide that fireplace with a suitable entertainment center. Then you have your front channels at appropriate height. Your components integrate into the furniture instead of being the furniture themselves. Then you simply drill a 1/4" hole through the floor on the front wall and another on the back wall, drop your speaker wires through, string them through the basement and come up neatly behind you. Surround sound isn't just having 5 speakers and a subwoofer. All of your media is encoded for surround. In terms of hearing things that sound correct, your best bet is to reproduce the media as it is intended to be heard. |

Center channel needs to face forward close to ear level, for one thing. Not exactly possible with the Titanic there. The TV is on the hearth because I am waiting for the DTV guy to hook up the HDTV antenna and run the cable to the other end of the room. We don't use the fireplace, we don't care about it. That is a new TV, the old TV was in a different position. The components are on the floor because I don't want to use the rack that they used to sit in, I have not bought the TV stand and the TV is not where it's going to be when I get done. Big fucking deal, the laptop is on the speaker. Read above. I don't like center speakers, they sound like shit as far as I am concerned. Most people have them set at too high a volume. I am not going to use one. Again, I don't want to string speaker wire around the house nor do I want to cut up the walls to run speaker wire. Seriously, you have given your opinion, it's time for you to quit shitting in my thread. I do not require further assistance from you and I certainly do not want your holy than thou attitude in my thread. Click *Ignore* Bu-Bye |

I know better than to post in this thread cuz its going no where, but Im bored.
You dont like the sound of a center channel? Ummm, ok. Dont buy a HDTV then, dont but a DVD player, and please dont waste money on a Blu-Ray player either. The center channel speaker carries the majority of the sound you hear in a 5.1 setup. Ever go to the movies? Does the center channel speaker sound bad there too? Keep you laptop on the non-shielded speaker a little longer and you wont have to worry about posting pictures on ARF.com cuz they will all be erased from your hard drive. Bose sucks. They are only fine for people that dont know any better. Its kind of like fucking a fat chick. |

Last movie I went to see in a theater was X-Men 2 in 2003. And yes, most movie theater sound systems sound like shit. I-Max theaters do have some killer sound systems. As far as the laptop on the speaker goes, well, it's been on top of that speaker for over 6 months now without a problem. You guys are not the only ones who are telling me to avoid Bose. I do thank you for that advice. The search continues. |

I'll try to help here too......
Do not buy Bose, seriously. You're better served spending $250 elsewhere and throwing the other $250 out your car window. Then you'll at least have decent speakers when wasting money. The center channel does not sound "bad". It is simply another speaker in the system (that needs to match the mains). It could be set up wrong, but having one correctly installed will not in any way sound worse for movies, it improves them. You can get by without though. Good stereo speakers can project the center channel well enough to create a "phantom center". I wouldn't avoid the center, but you can get good sound without. If you just want something basic and not huge, I'd recommend something like this Good speakers at good price, Ascend Acoustics If you add a separate subwoofer it'll really make a difference. Judging by the reactions to some of the similar advice here.......you won't listen to us. I recommend going to AR15.com of Home Theater Info and doing just a little research (search Bose there for example). eta: active link |

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the speakers you have? Nothing, they are great when you want to get loud. Sometimes I want to listen to a movie with "full sound" "quietly". The speakers (and the sub) need a bit of "power" to make them sound good. I ended up buying a Sony BDV-E500W system, it's just want I want it to be. Sounds good when it's "quiet" (highs, lows, bass) and it can get "loud" too, although not as loud as the Kenwood setup. The wireless rear surround speakers are a plus. And yes, I hooked up the center speaker.
