What's the thought on getting extra protection for your weapons?  Are they generally covered under your homeowners?

I was just going to post on this topic. Any thoughts from anybody?

I have GEICO as my car/renters but I heard they don't do black rifles and I want them on a seperate policy anyway since I store my guns in another location besides my apartment.

I have Allstate. I asked about it. I will be getting a rider to cover replacement. They will need someone, of their choosing, to document and value my 'cache'. I did not talk numbers yet until I figure out what I think the collection it worth. I do not have that much stuff, I just could not replace it all if the worst should happen.

Usually on a typical home owners insurance, there are limits for various categories.  Guns may fall under "sporting equipment" or something like that, but the limit may be a few thousand dollars.  Therefore, if you've got tens of thousands of dollars woth of guns, you might want to either get an additional rider (or whatever the term is) with your insurance company, OR you can get separate insurance for the guns (the NRA has a program or a partner for that, IIRC), or you can take the money you might spend on insurance riders over many years, and buy a really good safe, and let that be your "insurance"

Home owners insurance I have had only covered $2,000 in firearms unless you get a separate rider.  I got the separate rider but they required me to get the firearms appraised and you had to list all the weapons and their serial numbers.  After all that, they cancelled the rider and told me they no longer would insure the firearms.

NRA has an insurance program for members where you can get additional insurance.  It requires you to list all firearms and serial number info, I don't remember if they require an appraisal.

If you have 100 or more firearms an appraisal is going to cost you some money.  When I only had 10 I went to a gunship and they did it for free on an appraisal for insurance only purposes.

The best first step of insurance is a good fire rated safe not a cheap one if you have a small collection. Then homeowners insurance and any additional insurance you think you need.
