So is this a road rage/dickhead move or is it acceptable under certain circumstances?
I've really cooled my jets behind the wheel, since I started carrying a few years back, but I friggin hate tailgaters. Yesterday I was doing about 38 in a 35 down a main road in town. There was someone alongside me in the next lane and there was some old guy literally 2 feet off my bumper. I didn't give a full on brake slam but I tapped them a little bit. It made me feel all tingly inside to see him lock his breaks up and get all swervy. When he got the chance, he flew past me at about 45 and gave me the old man stare down. I realize that it's an unsafe move and he could have been up my ass. But he was the one behaving unsafely. If a dog or a kid had ran out in front of me, it would have gotten real ugly real fast. As it was, he backed off and no one got hurt. Let the flaming begin. |

Quoted: Overfueled truck + Laggy turbo = smoke. Make their car disappear, they usually get the idea after one or two clouds. As a fellow diesel driver, I approve of this message. Usually, tapping the brakes to make the brake lights come on is enough for them to get the point. Even says to do so in the drivers handbook, errrr, at least it used to. I haven't read it in a while. |

If you're driving under the limit and someone is tail gating you, get the fuck out of the way. If you're driving at the limit or above and they're tail gating you, just let them figure out a way to safely pass. Brake checking just escalates the situation and shows you are a fucking moron. |

I always like the guy that rides your bumper in rush hour traffic and flashes his light like you are to pull over so that he can ride the bumper of the guy that is 10 feet in front of me. 8 or 9 dangerous moves while risking life and he's like 60 ft ahead!!!! pure win!

No flames, but if I'm doing the speed limit or better and I've got someone riding my ass, I get pissed also.
Anyone who is willing to risk my life along with his/hers so they can get home to catch Idol Rewind or some other stupid shit deserves to be cock/cunt punched. Chances are these assholes just ride it long enough to get around you and stuck behind the next guy or get to the stop sign 2 seconds faster than they would have safely. I personally, would love to see more people pulled over and ticketed for this. |
| ......If I'm driving to work at 4am on a one lane highway and some one rides my ass even though I'm doing 5 over the speed limit. Get ready, cuz I'm driving a 2000 dollar piece of shit, but its got good brakes. Some of these assholes won't pass, they just ride your ass so close You can't see their headlights. I don't slam the brakes, I just get their attention. |
|
Twenty years ago I brake checked the shit out of people. Same rule....if I can't see your headlights, watch my back end go vertical as I slam on the brakes. But now.....after having kids and mellowing a bit, I just take my foot off the accelerator and slow down. They eventually go around. |

Do it often but the better response is usually to stay directly beside the car next to you for as long as possible. Hope you do that in front of a cop. I was behind some ass like you, and a cop lit his lights up behind me, I pull over, and he goes on by and nails the prick in the left lane |
I see nothing wrong with a light tap of the break (not to slow down but just to activate your break lamp) so the tailgater might back off a bit. I also see nothing wrong with letting your foot off the gas and slowing down gradually enough to make the tailgater want to pass you (and occasionally, when he/she starts to pass you to speed back up again )

I use to be one of those brake checkers but stopped it long ago. Now I just slow down rather than get hit and have to have my vehicle repaired. Yup. I figure if I slow down enough they'll get the hint and pass. Increasing the distance between you and the car in front of you, thus giving you more room to react and not get rear ended, is a plus as well. I also have a washer fluid sprayer that over shoots the roof. I can make them not want to be behind me by simply cleaning my windshield for a while.

Escalating the situation would be to downshift into a low gear, and then coast from the speed limit until they decide to pass you in a rage, and then not letting them pass.
ETA: Looks like I'm not the only one. |

I just take my foot off of the accelerator. I've gotten down to 10MPH before a guy got the idea and got off my ass. It was a rather interesting sight to see. (10 in a 40) This is the right answer. The guy behind you will pass you and move along, and it's not dangerous and won't escalate the situation. Btw, people who intentionally impede traffic by setting up a moving roadblock deserve to be run off the road and beaten with a tire iron. |

Can I ask you a question? Seriously?
How is it you don’t have a problem with driving next to someone but you have a problem with someone driving behind you? Cause it’s a whole lot more dangerous to drive beside people than it is to “tailgate” Really, if someone is behind you they nearly certainly can stop in time if you get on the brakes. Odds are they are paying more attention to the road than you are and will see that you will need to brake before you do. Rear end accidents can happen no matter how far back someone is if the person behind isn’t paying attention to the road. And, slow driving is the number one cause of not paying attention to the road. Point is, that aggressive tailgater is less likely to hit you, (unless you jam on your brakes in an attempt to cause an accident) than some guy who’s three car lengths back and busy text messaging someone. And, if you are beside people you are completely incapable of maneuvering to avoid an accident. Not only that but you are counting on the guy next to you not swerving into you. And since slow drivers are usually distracted drivers, this is a real possibility. So really, slow drive all you want. But don’t block the lanes of travel by driving beside people and don’t pin people either. Leave room for people to get around you. It ain’t so hard. |

Believe it or not sometimes people DO need to get somewhere in a hurry. Tailgating is not the answer, but people will do it until the end of time. Best solution is to just coast until they pass you. (I've been down to about 10 in a 45 )

Both, tailgating...AND brake checking are fucking idiotic. Lies. Tailgating is the far worse of a dick move. Tailgating...you deserve it if you rear-end somebody end they end up paying a hefty repair bill (or insurance hike). Go the speed limit and stay the fuck off of other peoples' bumpers for no worries. |
