I found a Centurion Liberty safe on clearance for around $300. http://www.libertysafe.com/safe_centurion.php

One old codger told me this morning that they didn't have the keys and that they were 'stuck with it'. Another employee saw me leaving and asked what he said. He then helped me take a look at it and found the keys in the envelope with the manual. The door is open and the bolts are out. He tinkered with the key while I looked over the manual and it seems that someone screwed with the combo and it reset. There were instructions for how to reset the combo and he said that he'd work on it and call me if he could get it to work. The key would lock the dial but he couldn't get the handle to turn.

My question is - is this normal and something that can be corrected either by resetting the combo or having a locksmith have a look at or does it sound hosed? It is a hell of a deal at $300 but only if it works.

I think all they would have to do is call Liberty and they could help you reset the combo.  The key is supposed to lock the dial.  That's all it does.

I believe the lock can be replaced as long as the door is open.  Might try the safe forum for some better info, or call a local locksmith that does safe work.

As you said, the key is not to open the safe but to lock the dial, so you can secure the safe from someone who may know the combination, and prevent dial manipulation.  I assume that you tried the combo a couple of times once you got the safe unlocked?

That sounds like a good deal, just as long as you know that you're getting a lower end gun safe (nothing wrong with that) and I'd offer them $250 since it is broken

If the safe is open, that's 90% of the battle.

I'd buy it for that price, worst case scenario is a locksmith fixes it.

Buy it!  That's a great deal.

That safe goes in the $600 range, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. Even though it is a good deal I don't have the scratch to be stuck with a 450lb paperweight!

I figured it was good to go but just thought I'd use ARFCOM for the definitive answer. Thanks again!

Used to work for a locksmith.  You can do it.  With the door opened remove any covers to see the dials........
It's easy to do.

If the bolts are retracted and the handle won't turn, that is odd. If they are extended and the handle is locked, that makes sense of course.

A 450lb safe is definitely better than nothing but keep in mind that's not a permanent solution. Even double that weight is something I can move across carpet myself by pushing it.

^ This.

I  never worked for a locksmith, but I adjusted my combination on my safe this way.

I got replacement keys for my safe from the manufacturer with the serial number, a notarized statement, and a small fee.
