I know salting polls in GD is a time honored tradition, but is it possible to link user names to votes in demographically specific polls, "I'm black and...", I'm female and...". The results in some of these of polls are simply outside the bounds of statistically probability.
I'm not suggesting violating anyone's privacy, but deliberately "throwing" a poll seems to me analogous to monkeying with QUOTE headers to falsely attribute opinions, etc. to others. |

Sounds like it's really a problem in useless GD polls anyway. I don't see a good way to make people be honest in them, even if you publish usernames next to results people will still vote like idiots. At least in GD. Does this happen in other forums too? Oh, I don't expect them to be honest about what they think, just what they are. And I wasn't so much thinking to publish names as, when there's a poll with "I'm black, and..." options that has a hundred replies, eighty of which reflect poorly in blacks, the staff might informally skim down the list to see if any of our more virulent 88s are there, and send the aforementioned a polite IM saying "Knock it the fuck off, asshole." Same for other demographics that aren't really popular here. I don't know, this might be the only one I've participated in that had a formal poll function. I don't remember if Glock Talk did or not. I'll blow through Heartless Bitches or Jezebel once in a while to see what bitchdom is up to, but I just lurk. <shrug> |

I don't speak for the site in any way, but I doubt that's something they want to get into. Much less bogging down moderators/staff by making them sift through often times ludicrous polls and results. |

One doesn't. It's not about vetting every vote in every poll. It's to identify disparities between the demographic identity a member presents as in the public forum and what they claim to with their vote. It's about the atheist who's always on the verge of getting sanctioned for bashing religion and then votes "I'm a Christian and I think most Christians are bigots" That said, you're probably right. Trying to eliminate GD voter fraud is probably just shoveling shit upstream. And it's very possible that the system doesn't correlate username and poll choice, that it doesn't consider a vote as being a post. I know voting in a poll doesn't bump the thread. |
