In the Search Location selection box, the forums under each community are not in alphabetical order and I find it hard to find, say the Reloading forum.  Suggest that the forums be alphabetized under the communities.

Search is getting the much wanted and much needed overhaul.

The plan is to bring the live search more in line with typical searching. This means searching on post bodies (messages), multiple keyword searching, simple Boolean searches (most likely), and more. There's still some testing to complete and streamlining of the catalog process, but it should finally be available in the near future.

As to the order of things... Typically they are ordered as they appear on the community page. So if XXX forum is near the bottom of a community forum, it will be in the same spot in the list. This is to keep things as constant as possible.

That is awesome to hear, Juan.

As you may remember, I did a lot of work, reading, writing, and research on database design and information retrieval in grad school, so I've always been something of a "search snob."

I know you mention simple Boolean on the "active" site..... have you given any further consideration to complex Boolean on the archive side?

For example, say I'm looking for a certain post made about the Masada back in 2007.

Now, there were shit-tons of mention of the Masada on this site back in 2007, but say I was looking for something that I remember Rich himself saying.  (also lets say he said it in Magpul's Industry Forum)

So if there were some way for me to combine a search of Magpul's Industry Forum from 1/1/2007 through 12/31/2007, but which were made by user="Magpul," that would be awesome.

If there isn't any easy way to do that under your present indexing scheme, then a simple "search within results" feature (using two of the search types you already offer) would be the next best thing.

For example:
Search1

keyword = "masada"
fields = "Body"
search location = "Industry Community > Magpul Forum"
start = "1/1/2007"
end = "12/31/2007"

<then, Search Within Results>

Search2

keyword = "Magpul"
fields = "Reply Authors"
If you want/need any assistance (even just a hard head to bounce ideas off of), feel free to call or email.

Best,

Jake.

It should support multiple layered searches as well as boolean searching on body text. So you will be able to search for:

Author: Magpul

Date Range: xxx to xxx

Location: Forum or Board XXX

Fields: Message Bodies

Keywords: Masada AND Prototype NOT PDR

This would (if my mind isn't mush yet) result in a search that you wanted, but take advantage of the boolean capabilities to search the text body for the keywords "Masada" and "Prototype" but exclude results with "PDR" in the post. So you could find that specific Masada prototype thread and avoid any posts by magpul with the PDR being discussed as well. (Since your memory was great and you knew there were several discussions, but this one focused JUST on the magpul proto and other threads discussed multiple projects.)

This is all in design and testing phase at the moment, so we may skip the complex boolean searches and opt for a more simple keyword combination search like.

Keywords: Masada Prototype

Search Type: All Keywords (or exact match, or any keyword)

Still too early to tell how it will shape up, BUT the key is, it IS being worked on.
